Scrubs in public ..........does it bother you?

It never bothered me. Most people have to hit the store on the way home from work - it's just life. It must be anti-uniform week. Just the other day, a friend told me it bothers her to see soldiers dressed in uniform in public. I can't figure that one out either.

That does not bother me in the least.

I am not anti uniform, just anti germ spreading

I don't get it and it shouldn't be allowed. Who knows what they have on those scrubs at the end of a workday and then they are out grocery shopping leaning over apples....GROSS!

How in the world would:

• you outlaw wearing scrubs in public, and

• know that the person actually worked in an area that would expose them to anything?

My children's pediatrician wears regular clothing during office visits. If she stops by the store afterward you'd never know what she did during the day. Not sure what the deal is with the scrubs phobia.

My daughter is an pediatric occupational therapist and scrubs are their uniforms. She does not work in a hospital. She wears them to the store after work. There are no bodily fluids on her scrubs.

BTW gang, I work on my horse farm. 24/7 surrounded by all kinds of muck and mire, and I go to the grocery story or Walmart in the same clothes I wore all day caring for the barn, horses etc. Am I more or less "germy" than a pair of scrubs?

It makes me mad to see people in regular clothes when they are out and about. You just don't know what they've been exposed to. At least you know to avoid the scrubbers.

I live near 3 hospitals and see it allllllll the time and it's just nasty beyond belief.

Even going in reverse. I see people with scrubs taking brisk walks around the park around lunchtime. And then...they are going BACK to their emergency room in those same clothes? Yucko!


I'm sure there are all sorts of exceptions etc etc...I don't care. Put on something else.

My DH is Coast Guard and they are not supposed to wear their uniform anywhere outside of CG business. He either changes at work or comes straight home. EVen when we go out to lunch together he changes before we leave the station.

You can tell the ones that like to wear their uniform out as a "status" thing, especially the ones at the mall that have their uniform on at the movies.

Didn't know that. I was referring to fatigues and I always assumed they were on call, or National Guard guys returning from training or something.

Big point to remember is that everyone wears scrubs these days, not just nurses. Dental receptionists, medical sales, daycare workers etc... You never know what the person next to you has been exposed to, regardless of what they're wearing.

I wear scrubs to work every day and I work in a medical billing office. It's mandated by my employers that I wear scrubs as a uniform. I NEVER come into contact with the patients. I wear my scrubs to the grocery store or anywhere else I need to after work. I don't carry any germs around with me on my scrubs that aren't going to be there anyway!

I have been approached by people asking me very private medical questions and I have to explain to them that I'm not a nurse. I wish people realized that workers in other professions wear scrubs, NOT JUST NURSES!

Oh....and I will continue to wear my scrubs out when I have to run errands right after work. Walk the other way if you don't like it because I know that I am not endangering someone elses health and I refuse to drive all the way home to change and then all the way back out to where I need to run my errands.

Doesn't bother me in the least.. I know some people who wear those cute scrubs who aren't even in the field of medicine.. They just find them very comfy..

I work NICU, PICU, CICU, ER.
And I do transports and sit ECMO.
We wear scrubs. And we buy them. The hospital gives us nothing.
Also we practice universal precautions fiercely.
At 0530 I get in my car and come to work.
Hopefully at 1900 I leave work. Exhausted.
And I go straight home.
First thing I do is head to laundry room and remove scrubs and shoes. I NEVER wear my work shoes for anything except work. That to me is the grossest, the shoes.
Then I shower without touching anybody.
It's my ritual.

Does it bother me when I see other people in public wearing scrubs?
No.
Many people wearing scrubs are not in direct patient care. And I don't have to touch them.

Probably about the same germ wise but smell wise...I think it would be quite noticable.

I am blissfully unaware of what other people are wearing unless their private bits are in my face.

It bothers me when people who are not in the medical field wear scrubs. I think they are just being "wanna be's". Why do this? Comfort? Buy some sweatpants.
You don't see people who don't work at McDonald's walking around in McDonald's uniforms, and people who aren't flight attendants wearing flight attendant uniforms.

There are plenty of Drs and nurses out there that see patients in regular clothes. What about them? If you saw them in a store after hours you would have no idea they just dealt with sick people all day.
Point is, we have no idea where anyone has been, or what they have been doing when we see them in public.

I just got back from getting my flu vaccine at my doctor's office. The receptionists were wearing scrubs. My contact with them consisted of signing a paper they passed under a glass partition giving them permission to bill my insurance for the vaccine. The nurse was wearing....JEANS!! Seriously, jeans and a T-shirt! Not denim-colored scrubs, but actual jeans. And not a blouse, but a t-shirt. If you saw her anyplace after work, you'd have no clue she'd been seeing patients all day.
(and...honestly, it didn't look very professional. I know we're past the days of white starched dresses, but jeans? Really??)

Casual Fridays! That's what they had at the hospital where I used to work!

My scrubs are soaking in the washing machine as I type, and my work shoes are only worn at work, and taken off as soon as I get home. I would never go shopping in scrubs but that is just me, I do have direct patient contact (physical therapy) and can't wait to get in the shower when I get home.

DS is exactly the same way. He is respiratory therapist. Patient contact all night.

I wear scrubs at my job from time to time....


I also wear them to the store. The only difference with me is that I work in a physician billing office where there is no patient contact whatsoever, but we are still allowed to wear scrubs.


When it comes to the germ transfer issue....What is the difference between a nurse wearing scrubs and a doctor that wears a shirt and tie and slacks and sees patients? If a doc sees a patient that is sick, and is just wearing his normal clothes, and then goes to the grocery store afterwards, the probability of him passing germs along is just as great as someone who is wearing scrubs.
