OK, when they say you have to have two pins side by side to tell the difference, it is true! I found this out the hard way. A few months ago I ordered some pins from ebay seller, travelinwynns. One of the pins I recieved was the same pin I recieved from a CM at DCA a few weeks before. He pulled the pins out of his pocket, saying he had just got them from backstage. (the kids were being super-sweet trading with him, one of those great Disney moments)
Anyway, the pins I got in the ebay lot looked pretty legit, so I took out the two to compare. WOW!!! first off, there was no noticeable difference in weight, or feel. I'll let a picture speak a thousand words. the ebay pin is on the right.

First off, the ebay pin is SLIGHTLY smaller. You can't measure it. It just is.
The second thing is the color. The CM pin is a clear silver, while the ebay pin is not as silver, just a hint of tannish.
Next, the clarity, which I found odd. the lines on the ebay pin are actually clearer...maybe since it is smaller.
Now here is the back of the Cm pin

And the back of the ebay pin

The back is what first what made me notice the differnce in size, because the words are the same, but the font was smaller. You can't tell too well from the picture, because the camera kept focusing on the nubs and not the font.
One last pin, from the same series which was in the ebay lot, but i don't have another to compare to...

I'm guessing this is definately a fake, since Dale's tooth isn't even filled in.
So now I don't know which of my HM pins in my collection are fake and which are real, if the fakes are this close to the real. If I didn't have a real one to compare it to, I probably would think this was a real pin.

I still can't believe they make fakes of these pins, I mean, they're not even very expensive @ the parks!!

I always thought the same -- if I was going to bootleg a pin, at least it would be one I REALLY want of the original. :confused3 :lmao:
I suppose they do the more common pins figuring to stay more under the radar. :confused3
There is a pin out there I am sure was a bootleg. Or was given to very few people, if it existed. (I have the lanyard. And it is not something most people would even want.)
The two people I know who have the pins bought it from two different Ebay sellers, who cannot recall where they got it. :rolleyes1
I have yet to find anyone who acknowledges there was a pin version.

I look at the Pluto pins and I see the Mickey head is off (one is touching the toe line and the other is off) and the star is different on the chest. I could say there is an issue with quality control and the fact that a lot of pins are made and mistakes happen but that is clearly a different pin...

I don't belive all scrappers are scrappers I think some people find mistakes and make them out to be more than that but there is no way that pin was made from the same mold...

After reading this post, I checked my children's pins that I bought from e-bay. Sure enough, one of the Jasmine princess pins did not have a nose on it! My daughter pointed this out to me. I check the others like this on e-bay that are for sale, and they all have a nose. The one we have is a fake. I bought it last year and I can't remember who I bought it from. I will have to go back and look.

Yes, we saw those fakes at DL this past week. The whole ice sculpture set was scrapped as far as we can tell. We did trade for the Pluto and a Minnie & Mickey to compare to ours.....we got ours in DL in Jan. Anyway, yes, this is a GREAT example of a scrapper. It's very hard to tell and now the scrappers know about the 2 pin nubs on the back so they are being scrapped that way. :( But you can see how the nubs on the "real" pin are different from the scrapper nubs.......

Agreed! Its prob the same reason they knock off purses at the local flea market week after week.... a quick buck. :( So sad!

I don't mind knock off purses like that, it does not plague a trading system that a lot of people use. If it's not infringing on copyright, I don't mind.

What was funny, last week at DL, we saw guests with the ice sculpture pins on, but they were almost BLUE. It made me wonder how many different conterfeit versions are out there...

It's almost sad....I feel so bad for those who don't know because they don't have the original sets. I only knew they were fake because we do have the original set. :(

oh wow! :scared1:
that makes me think if i have any "fake" pins in my colleciton :confused3
Well that kinda stinks...:sad2:

The whole scrapper thing turned me off to Hidden Mickey pins. I buy from Disney Store now. after I got a scrapper I was so DARN mad. This is over kill, but I felt...well...betrayed.

Not necessarily overkill, I felt that way too. But instead of giving up on Hidden Mickey's I educated myself and now I feel much more knowledgable than I did previously. There is a lot of info our there you just have to search it out.

Love Stitch, you probably do have scrappers, I know I do!! But you know what, I really don't let it bother me anymore. It's disappointing and it's frustrating but I don't let it color my pin trading. :)

How did you educate yourself about the scrapper pins? Is there a website I could do some research? I am leaving tomorrow night and would like to learn as much as I can. My youngest DD loves to pin trade. The majority of the pins I have for her to trade are from the early Hidden Mickey Series. I would hate to trade these pins for a bunch of scrappers.

Thanks for the help,
Lucy

I use pinpics.com as my main resource. I search for pins there and see if there are scrapper notes. I also use the ODPT.com site to see what's new, what's upcoming and what the Hidden Mickey pins are. I chat traders up and see how they operate and how they treat my kids, I ask for advice from those who seem to be knowledgeable. Really there's not 1 way to educate yourself and there's not 1 way to avoid scrappers unless you just don't trade at all, since that's not what we want to do we just try to learn what we can when we can. And we know that it's likely we will get scrappers when trading, we know that and we deal with it. We don't like it, but it's not something we let get us really upset.

We trade a lot of pins when we go, and have traded for a good handful of scrappers between all of us. They wind up as pushpins on our bulletin board. That way, they still serve a purpose, and still make me smile when I see them.

I just bought a bunch of pins from ebay to use as traders for my nieces and I, and now I'm afraid they are all going to be scrappers, cause I bought a lot of cheap ones. I've never traded before, so I was just thinking they were so cheap because they were really common or something. I figured that the CM's wouldn't care if they traded for common pins, cause it's not like their pins are their own personal pins or anything. Now I'm going to have to look up all 27 on pinpics and try to determine if they are scrappers or not. How annoying. It didn't even occur to me that someone would be trying to rip me off. I'm glad that I at least found this info before I took scrappers to the parks to trade, how embarrassing! Especially for my nieces.
