DS9 is needs to complete a science project with a RECYCLING theme.
It can be an experiment or trash art.
All materials must be recycled items.

UGH:confused3
All I can come up with is to make life sized self portrait "kid"

Tape or glue old paper bags together, trace him on bags and cut out. Use different recycled materials(yarn, clippings, newspapers etc) to dress/decorate "kid"

What do you think??

ANY and ALL ideas welcome PLEASE!!

Can he just fill a recycling container and call it good :lmao:

You could do a food theme project--maybe start with a stalk of corn and show the many uses for that (food, oils, ethanol)? In the end the stalk can be composted.

DS8 just had that about a month or so ago for 3rd grade. He used a few empty soda bottles and used reynolds wrap (used and cleaned) and made a castle out of them. He then had to make a "for sale" ad to go along with it.

You can also google recylced soda bottles (I think that's what I looked under). I got a lot of hits with it that helped him out.

Maybe you can use aluminum cans somehow as flowers, make the stems out of something that would be recyclable, and use a 2 liter plastic bottle for the vase. My DD did something similar to this years ago and it was very cute and the teacher loved it.

Got a junkyard nearby? Making bags out of seatbelts is pretty cool. You would go to a junkyard and buy 3-4 seatbelts out of a wrecked car. Cut the belts, wash them, and basket-weave them into a bag. It takes a little sewing to finish the edges of the finished product, but there are designers who sell bags like this for big bucks.

I had my fourth graders do this while student teaching and the loved it!
They made a piggy bank our of a two liter pop bottle (painted it pink and added legs and a snout with cut up toilet paper rolls).

They made a shopping bag out of the plastic rings that hold 6 packs of pop bottles together (tied them together to form a shopping bag--so cute!).

They created "tennis raquets" out of wire coat hangers (strung rubberbands or shoe strings across to make the strings and used a crumpled up piece of newspaper wrapped in duct tape for the ball).

They made the Earth out of torn up pieces of green and blue pictures from magazines.

Bird feeder/house out of pop bottles.

Magazine holders out of cereal boxes (cut on the diagonal and covered in wrapping paper)

If I think of any more I'll post them.

I saw something similar to this at a pet expo last weekend - a bag made out of dog-food bag. It is something similra to this:

And the same seller has this too - a business card holder made from a juice carton.

Also thought of something else - go into "Google Images" and put in: vinyl record craft ideas bowl
There are some really great things to do with old vinyl records.

- build a robot statue out of recycled items
- make a small composter
- research to see how much plastic is thrown out every week, month, or year and make a replica to explain how much that is

Now that is really really cool. I could make a lot of things for sure.

I really like the clock made out of the vinyl.:thumbsup2

Google the images for "pop can art". So many cool things there as well.

Why not step outside the box and collect cans and bottles from classmates and from your family, neighbors, etc. Take them to be recycled.. and I think you get something like 5 cents per can or bottle. Donate the proceeds to a local charity of your son's choice, or to the school.. and to an exhibit on how recycling can help both the environment and the charity/school!
