Sci-Fi Drive Thru Question

Thanks to a tipoff from someone here on the Dis (thanks ArielSRL), we realized that Fantasmic was too scary for our DS3. Last night I was able to cancel our MM Fan! dinner package and pick up a reservation for 50s Prime Time Cafe. I'm ok if that's what it ends up being but I think Sci-Fi sounds like fun so I'm going to keep checking for a reservation. The question is, are any of the movie clips scary for children? I'd hate to swap out one scary activity for another. TIA.

Depends on the kid. They're all pulp old stuff, and it is Disney so they're pretty tame, but they're still, well, pulp sci fi.

Only you can really judge your kid.

So Twilight Zone? Swamp Thing? Creature from the Black Lagoon? Or Star Trek, Buck Rogers, and Lost in Space type stuff? Sometimes people lump sci-fi and horror together a la Twilight Zone or X-Files. It's hard to judge when I have no idea myself what they'll be.

There are definitely ghouls and zombies.

If you think Haunted Mansion might be an issue, SFDI is likely to be an issue.

It includes trailers from campy 1950's black and white sci fi and horror movies, a couple of cartoons (Tom & Jerry and "The Cat Who Hated People") interspersed with Movie News clips about inventions and gadgets coming in the future (from a 1950s perspective.) Among the movie trailers are Plan Nine from Outer Space, The Attack of the 50 Foot Woman, The Amazing Colossal Man, Cat Women of the Moon, The Horror of Party Beach, The Giant Gila Monster, Devil Girl from Mars, and It Conquered the World. The trailers are about 2-3 minutes each and the total film loop is about 45 minutes long. While most would probably call the movies corny or campy, there are elements in them that could scare little children.

This should give you an idea ...

Honestly if Fantasmic was too scary, I think you might have an issue with SciFi clips as well unfortunately.

I have a 2 1/2 year old who was just there with me in Dec and Feb. We did Sci Fi without any problems and he thought it was fun. He did Fantasmic with us in Feb and loved it, and we have done HM with him as well. I think it's a judgement call based on your child. If you think he will be scared then I would switch, but my little one is very easy going and loved all of these experiences. Good luck!

IMO, the food at Sci-Fi is scarier than the movie clips. I won't ever go back. The 50's Prime Time Cafe has much better food and won't scare your child. The CMs there do a great job of being "in character" and it's a very fun experience.

Thanks for info, everyone! We're debating HM. We may give it a try with him because we want to see if he'd be able to go on ToT. We think he'd love the ride, but the pre-show may be too much. He's a dare devil on physical thrills but is still a little scared of Marshmallow in Frozen.

I think we'll keep 50s. We've never been so I'm sure we'll have fun. Thank you all for the help!

I agree with another poster, it depends on your child. I've seen very young kids sitting in there just watching the film while eating a french fry. It's a really cool place to eat; I hope you all get to experience it in the future. Enjoy the 50's Cafe, it's really awesome.

Just chiming in, in terms of ToT...definitely do Haunted Mansion first. ToT has a lot of darkness (you may already know if you've done it yourself before). A lot of darkness...falling rapidly in the darkness..ghosts past the pre-show, etc. It's a great ride with some of the best themeing you'll find on Disney property, but I would rider swap if Marshmallow and/or Haunted Mansion are too scary.

I totally agree...if Marshmallow is scary for him I would never consider doing ToT!
I don't remember Sci-Fi being scary at all but the seating might be a little challenging if there is 3 of you. It's basically 2 to a seat so it's hard to converse with others.

That's the plan. If we decide not to do HM or if he's at all scared on it, no ToT for him. If he loves it and asks for more, then we'll give ToT a chance.

I told the kids last year that Disney won't do anything to hurt them (I made an unfortunate decision to ride Dinosaur with the older kids last year - they rode it but didn't see anything on the account of their heads being buried in my lap - we can laugh about it now :D). Last night I was telling them a story (Harry Potter and friends get transported to Disney World). DS3 told me to tell Ron that Disney won't do anything to hurt him so at least he remembers that. :p
