i was looking at going to the sci fi dine-in at mgm for a meal and i noticed they have a big screen, does this show suitable things for 3 to 5 year olds or is it as the name suggests sci fi example star trek etc.i fancy eating there so the rest of my family (all older)can eat in peace while the little ones watch something, you know how it is I AM FINISHED AND I WANT TO GO NOW :jumping1: does anyone know another restaurant with distractions for the young ones

Hi we ate there 2 weeks ago. It is very dark - dont know whether little ones could handle this.

It is set out like a drive in thearte and they show 50's/60's B movies. Inbetween the clips they do show some Tom and Jerry and adverts.

Personally I think 3 -5yrs would be too young as some of the clips are from spoof horrors.

Hope that helps

DD ate there when she was 4 and enjoyed the experience. It is a little dark in there but she's never been afraid of the dark so it didn't bother her and she enjoyed the film clips.

The "table" is actually a car. Most families seat the little ones in front and the adults in back. The kids feel like they are "driving" and you can keep an eye on them. ;)

Although our DD's are older now (12, 8) they loved Sci-Fi when they were younger and still do. The movies that they show are really cheesy and didn't frighten DD's at all. They love the cars. I think at the end of the day it depends on the individual children and how they handle the dark and this type of environment.

Good luck with your decision! :goodvibes

Just to clarify, they don't screen full movies, just clips interspersed with cartoon clips and retro ads.

Whispering Canyon Cafe at Wilderness Lodge and 'Ohana at the Poly both have audience participation for kids. So does 50s Prime Time Cafe at MGM in a way. Then, of course, there are all the character meals.

we went there for DD9 bnirthday with DD7 and neice 5 and nephew 4, they loved it, basically they had been "deprived" of tv for over a week and would watch anything, they were glued, its like deb said clips of films and its what i would call comedy horror/sci fi like attack of the 50ft woman and creatures from the 50s that are not at all scary, i loved it and so did the kids, you eat in cars, the servers are on roller skates the theming is authentic, DH really wasnt keen as it was so dark, he felt it was too dark and couldnt see what he was eating, I say go for it, kids will love it!

I am considering doing this in September as i think my boys would love eating in cars!!

Is it essential to make an ADR or would we be able to walk in?

Thanks for any help. :goodvibes

If it's during the free dining plan then make an ADR. Last August our visit bridged the free dining (we didn't have it b.t.w) and the first week (before free dining) we just walked in and got a table, the second week (once the free dining had started) we had to wait a long time for a table and it was very, very busy.

It always seems to be busy, so, unless you don't mind a long wait, either make an ADR, or get one as soon as you enter the park in the morning.

We actually got seated in a 'flying saucer' which I didn't like much at all.. I'd like to say i'd give Sci-fi another chance and request a car next time but there are so many restaurants we haven't tried that I can't bring myself to when we didn't really enjoy it much last time.

It is one of the most popular MGM resturants so I would do an ADR just incase.

Even if you don't get a chance to eat there, you certainly can duck in for a peek. It's worth seeing!

i think i will split the family up and go with my twins of 19 and the 14 year old,my wife :maleficen is not to keen on eating in the dark  so she can have a big mac with the little-uns

I phoned yesterday and managed to get an ADR for dinner on 20th Sept!! :cool1:

Really pleased as my boys will love this!!
