Schwarzenegger Wants Stray Animals Killed Faster

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to repeal a state law that requires animal shelters to hold stray dogs and cats for up to six days before killing them.

Instead, there would be a three-day requirement for strays. Other animals, including birds, hamsters, potbellied pigs, rabbits, snakes and turtles, could be killed immediately.

Actually if your dog is tagged with a license he/she is not a stray and you'll be notified if he/she is picked up. Responsible pet ownership would eliminate the chance of your dog dying in 3 days.

Not necessarily. This doesn't mean that stray animals WILL be euthanized after three days, it says that they can be. If a shelter is over-crowded with more animals coming in daily, it means that animals considered unlikely to be adopted need only be held for three days. Most shelters that I know of will keep adoptable animals indefinitely if they have the room and resources to care for them. However ... for those shelters currently struggling with over-crowding, it's often better for them to be able to cycle the unadoptable animals through more quickly to make room for abandonded pets who could be saved.
