School year here starts Tuesday September 1st

In Niagara, they just reversed their earlier decision to start the week before labour day. They are now also starting on Sept. 8. I hope this is now a final decision. How can anyone make any plans, I had just booked my holidays!!

I was curious and phoned the boys Elementary school and they told me that the teachers will be going back on the 1st and the kids on the 3rd or 4th as far as they know at this point. FYI:)

Aug 27th here in Calgary with the public schools. Something to do with Worldfest coming to Calgary the next week. No idea what it is.
Normally I would take that week off - had to move it back a week.

It is WorldSkills. Our school is hosting one of the countries and I have volunteered to be an ambassador to host one of the competitions.:)

As a teacher with the Peel school board I can tell you that the students return Tues. Sept 8th. Teachers have PD days on Sept. 2nd and 3rd. We were told earlier this week - I have no idea why they are waiting to let parents know.

Yes, I talked to a teacher today with the Peel Board and she said the same thing. Wondering why they aren't announcing it now????

I've called the Halifax school board and they are very sure that the children will start before Labour Day. They were quite surprised that I even asked....they thought it was common knowledge and there was nothing strange about starting before Labour Day.:confused3

Did they give an exact date or say when for sure we would know.

I don't actually have any plans, but would still like to know.

Thanks so much for the heads up! :)

Did you see they added an extra day to spring break:cool1:

Yes that's great - we are doing a cruise that week and not sure if we will drive and leave on the thursday afternoon or fly and leave on the Friday.
Your ticker says you are doing a cruise - do you know which one yet? We've found 2 we really like that week - HAL Ryndam and the Norweigan Pearl - great prices too!!

Back to school in Edmonton, Alberta is September 2. I called both the public and catholic school boards (I have 1 kid in each:rolleyes1) - so far they are not changing the dates - unfortunately I have most of our trip paid for so they will be returning late. I have 2 kids left in high school - they assure me they will handle it.:scared1:

RCCL Freedom on the Seas is the most likely one we will do, as I booked this quite a while ago at a good rate but...:lmao:

Now I can look and see if I can find any 8, 9, or 10 day cruises that we could do.

I would like to do one out of New York City.:rolleyes1 precuise shopping :cool1:

There is an 8 day NCL Dawn that leaves on March 12 that looks interesting,...

I also rebooked 3/4 back to back on the Wonder, but I think that will get changed to something else.

So I really have no idea what we will end up doing, but I am 99% sure it will be a cruise as my girls have so much fun.

Did they give an exact date or say when for sure we would know.

I don't actually have any plans, but would still like to know.

They said that the first day for students is Wed Sept 2nd. I asked 3 people in the Board - the operator, the person he transferred me to to confirm and then that person transferred me over to the Department of Ed and they confirmed it at well. However, during this discussion, there were some confusion of Sept 1st or 2nd, but they were adamant that it will be before Labour day, most likely on the Wed.

I have checked a few times with the school and they don't have a confirmed answer, but is almost positive that it will be Sept 2nd.

:confused3

Hope this helps.

(By the way, I do have plans and that's why I am trying to get a definitive answer, which apparently is very difficult at this point.)

Toronto District School Board 2009-10 School Year Calendar
Trustees approved the 2009-2010 school year calendar. Tuesday, September 8, 2009 will be the first day of school for all students. Wednesday, September 2 and Thursday, September 3 will be Professional Activity (PA) days for staff.

“The 2009-2010 school year presented a challenge because Labour Day in 2009 is very late, occurring on Monday, 7 September,” said Chair John Campbell. “As a result, we had to find a way to accommodate the minimum 194 school days required by the Ministry of Education between 8 September and 30 June 2010 while maintaining the usual school breaks for PA days, exams, statutory holidays, and March and Winter Breaks. We reached a solution that best meets Ministry directions and community expectations while providing the best options for student learning.”
