I am looking at my 3rd grader's school supply list. It is quite lengthy. They are asking for 8 dozen pencils per child. I really doubt my daughter will go through 96 pencils in 180 days of school. I am thinking of sending 4 dozen. Am I cheap, or is this just crazy? They also want multiples of lots of other things, filler paper, paper towels, crayons, index cards, lollypops. I figure I'll send half of what''s requested and then send in the other half mid-year if the teacher needs things.

I can understand them requesting filler paper, paper towels, and crayons. But 8 dozen pencils?! No way!

I bumped up the discussion thread from the other day. People posted their lists so you can compare.

That's rediculous. DD was in 4th grade last year and I started off by sending 2 dozen pencils and gave her more throughout the year as she needed them. She only asked for more pencils once. I personally think they use the excess to give to students who don't bring supplies This year, on registration day, I saw all sorts of supplies left from last years students, ie: lots of boxes of tissues, hand cleaner etc. still in the cubicles that were not yet assigned to the new class. :sad2:

I don't mind buying school supplies, amd I don't mind buying some extras to make up for the kids who don't supply anything, but the quantities are a bit much, 5 boxes of tissues, 3 boxes of crayons etc. I know that every store, church and civic organization in town sponsor back to school drives too.

Yea that's way to much pencils. I would send her in with just four dozen. Heck, I only needed one dozen for the year.

Where does the teacher store 8 dozen pencils x 20-25 students??????? This is ridiculous. I know that school budgets are tight & that teachers don't always get all the supplies they need, but that is ridiculous.

I don't mind sending some extra pencils or tissues every now and then but sometimes the requests are ridiculous.
What the heck do they want lollipops for?

I do . I don't mind buying for my kids but I do mind buying for those who do not supply anything , those same kids walk around with cell phones and get everything free in school.
The parents who really struggle will send anything they can to school even if it's just a dozen packs of pencils , the others just think the school will provide !

Are you sure that wasn't a typo? Did you call the school office, my son needs 10 pencils! There is no way I would send 8 doz pencils that is almost a dozen a month. I wouldn't send in 4 either I would send in one dozen. I'd call the office, not the teacher, and ask. Good Luck I think parents now a days need to start putting their foot down, can you imagine parents from the 50's or 60's sending in all this stuff.

I also thought my son's list was excessive. I didn't send in all the pencils, pens, crayons or markers that were listed. I will send them in as needed. I know there isn't a soul in his class that can't afford school suppies, so that isn't even an issue.

I remember at the end of the school year last year his teacher had boxes of tissues, ziplocs and other stuff leftover. Wonder what they do with the stuff?
I did send in all that suff again, two boxes of gallon ziplocs, 4 boxes of tissues, and one roill of paper towels. I don't understand the paper towel thing either since the school supplies paper towels.

:confused3 What do they want with lollipops???!!!

Last year my son had M&M's on his class list. They used them for multiplication.

Teacher here...

Believe me.....kids go thru pencils like water. Many parents never believe that Johnny needs more pencils again. But the end of the day most end up on the floor & all the kids say "They're not mine". Then, the next morning, they don't have any pencils to use.

I would say that most kids go thru about 4 or 5 pencils a week.

I never used that many pencils. I would keep them at home and ask my child everyday if they had paper and pencils.

I agree with the poster that said the kids that never have school supplies in class are the ones with everything else. Its horrible when in honors classes someone ask me for a pencil or paper, and its even worse when the guy who ask is a teachers kid! I wouldn’t get upset if it were a classmate who couldn’t afford it, but really you can get paper for 50 cent and a pack of wood pencils for a dollar.

BTW I was talking about high school students...

I'm a highschool student and I am in honors classes and I plan to take AP classes and duel enrollment and sometimes I drop my pencil or leave it in another class or run out of lead. I usually ahve an extra, but I have borrowed them before.
