School Supplies

Has anyone seen the full size soft sided zipper notebook covers? Not the bulky trapper keeper type style but more like one that isn't much bigger than a composition notebook.

I wanted one with my DDs name on it. It is $48 at 31. Um no thank you, I will make my own.

Thanks! It's absolutely true that we can say, "We shouldn't have to pay this or that", but when parents don't provide supplies, the teacher ends up doing it. The single thing I need most is KLEENEX. About 110 students rotate through my classroom each day, and they use more than a box a week.

I sub at the elementary where my kids used to go. I was in a first grade class doing a 'thank you' for the kids help in a fundraiser. I was talking to teacher (the team this was for had supplied napkins, cups, etc). I told her she could keep the extra stuff...she was so thankful. She said she budgeted $40 a month for 'out of pocket' supplies. That seems so unfair! It is because some people don't realize that the schools don't supply stuff or think others can do it.

I wonder if they had to pay someone to do the shopping /assembling of the packages. I wouldn't do all of that for free (especially because your prices are clearly sale prices, so it'd be necessary to watch and shop multiple times at multiple places). That would legitimately add to the price.

They can order in bulk and have it shipped. I really don't think someone takes each shopping list and physically waks around a store looking for deals. And if they did, all in that list could be picked up in 30 minutes or less. Also, the prices I listed were not sale prices with the exception of the spiral notebooks, pencils, and filler paper which I had personally bought the night before. All of the other stuff was googled and I didn't choose the lowest price.

Some of the stuff on that list is simply unnecessary. Sure it may be convenient, but its not necessary to learn. I wish teachers didn't pay out of pocket for supplies. As long as they do that, the funds will never come from a state/federal level.

This is my DD12's 8th grade "basic" list, her school's open house is next month so the teachers may add some other things:

white loose leaf paper
3 ring binder(which I will wait to find out which size i inch, etc.)
pencils and erasers: i get DD both mechanical and regular pencils, does anyone know which lasts longer?
ink pens: blue, black and red
colored pencils
colored markers
reinforcements(which she has from last year because she never needed them)
4 function calculator
scientific calculator ok, I am so not into math, but wouldn't there be 4 functions on a scientific calculator as well? i mean really 2 calculators?
2 large tissue boxes
2 pocket folders with clasps doesn't say how many but DD has some extra from last year
glue sticks
ruler
pencil pouch
graph paper
write on dividers
index cards (don't know which size)
composition books black and white kind( now I know how many to get as this past year, they would need new ones every so often)
dry erase markers
no wipes, no sanitizer-but once agian the teachers may request them at open house.

They buy them from a company preassembled. My school does the same thing & I had to pick from a list to put mine together. I found the stuff overpriced ($1.25 for a box of crayolas). I'm thinking this is the same deal.

I love finding the best deals on school supplies. Started today Shop Rite had single subject notebooks for .19 cents with an additional $10 purchase. Limit of 4-exactly what we needed. Already got the scientific calculator last week on sale at staples for $9. Had to buy an math work book-$9.95 at Staples. Wating for Walmart and Target to have the glue, pens, pencils, highlighters, folders and paper cheap.

Also have to buy some environmentaly friendly cleaning solution, 3 boxes fo tissues, 1 pk of handi wipes, it said hand sanitizer-not sure if they ment personal or a big bottle for the classroom.

I wish I had a list for my DD. She is going into 9th grade. I know all of her classes since we just had to register her this week after we moved. She has a couple of honors classes that she never has had before (her test scores put her there from 8th grade) so I am not sure if they want different stuff. I attend college and took her to my university bookstore to get some of the supplies on my financial aid. She picked out a 3 ring binder that was $11. I made her put it back and said we could get it at Walmart a lot cheaper. I guess I will be shopping the night school starts (Which is August 3 :scared1: )
