Though I'm not in school anymore, nor do I have any children, I have to wonder what my school district is thinking with starting school today, having tomorrow off for the holiday, then having only one day before the weekend. Why not just wait until Monday to start? Just seems to make more sense to me.

What holiday is tomorrow?

Yeah, our calendar is the same. It's idiotic.

Thursday is Rosh Hashanah.

Jewish Holiday- Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah - in some areas with a large enough Jewish student or teacher body it is a no school day - along the same lines as Good Friday, Chinese New Years etc.

We went back last week - Tues, Wed, Thurs
This week Tues, Wed and Friday (though I'm keeping my kids home Friday for the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah)
Next Week - teacher workshop day on Tuesday due to primaries and voting taking place in most of the schools

I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels that way. It just makes me scratch my head and wonder what they were thinking when they came up with that.

gotta get those 180 days in.

As a parent what I hate is the early release days of which we have way too many. We have 2 days this month with 11:10am dismissal. To me those are the real what is the point days. IMHO If you're going to have school, then have school.

Same reason why we started school on a Thursday, take Winter break starting on a Friday. The kids will end the year with classes on a Thursday. Teacher work day will be Friday and the following Tuesday. (over Memorial day weekend) They'll come back to work for 1 day after school is out and the holiday weekend. Makes no sense at all.

Our first day was today, then we have Thursday AND Friday off, with school again on Monday. So first week of school consists of only today.

Incredibly dumb.

As a teacher I like when we only have a few days the first week back. You usually take a day or 2 to go over rules and expectations, let the kids get used to being back in school, learn the routine. Not a lot of actual lessons are started, mainly review from last year. Then you can start "for real" on Monday with lessons and everything, especially since a lot of programs have lessons that are geared for a 5 day week. It's a lot better than starting on Monday, having the 2 days for orientation and then having to find something to do for 3 more days. So maybe there is a little method to their madnes :rotfl:

We always have the Jewish holiday's off. Usually the Easter/Spring Break..is scheduled to coincide with Passover.

Our district started yesterday and have off tomorrow and Friday as well.

DS8's school started today and he will not have his first day off until Columbus Day. Although, it does feel nice to have my "me time" days back :goodvibes I get more done (:laundy:, etc.) with DS at a school and DH at work :rolleyes1

We started school yesterday and we have tomorrow off too. It's actually a nice way to start the year because the kids get a little break in the beginning to recharge. It's hard after a full summer vacation to get them back in "school mode".

We have a muslim holiday off as well and I think it falls in November this year. We have one week where we go to school on Monday, have off Tuesday, go to school Wednesday and then have off Thursday and Friday.

Yeah, it's all about fitting in those 180 school days.

DS started school yesterday and has no days off this week. I am glad! He needs to get used to being back in school. Plus I'm off work tomorrow and Friday.

What I totally hate about his academic calendar is President's Week off. I swear he just gets used to being at school again after the Holiday break, and then in February, he's off a whole week. I would much prefer he get out earlier in June. We go until 6/24--that's the week before the 4th of July, but by the time Memorial Day rolls around, they seem to be done for the year anyhow.

DGD doesn't start until Friday - which I think is very odd.. In the past, it was always the Wednesday after Labor Day..:confused3

That's the way it was in the 60's when I was in school. Most of the schools here have been back in session for 2 or 3 weeks. The had to start school earlier when they started taking a week off for Thanksgiving (instead of just Thursday and Friday), and a week off for Presidents Day, instead of just President's day.

A lot of times the starting day of the school year is determined by teacher pay periods. In my district, we're given two choices of start dates to vote on and those are set so that we don't miss a pay check. It may be that if they waited until Monday to start, the teachers would have to skip a check. While it's only 3 school days later for the kids, the teachers more than likely went back to work last Thursday or Friday.

I was looking over our district calendar and noticed that the kids have off November 24-26th :confused3. Why the Wednesday before Thanksgiving ? I don't know. DH and I were only given Thursday and Friday off when we were students in the district.

They also have May 26-30 on the calendar as well for Memorial Weekend (wish we had a 5 day weekend when we were kids). However, that is to cover any extra snow days since they went over last year. If those days are not used, the kids get a 5 day weekend.

I actually really like the built in snow day days. Much better then tacking them on at the end of the shcool year. We always had them around Easter though.

It helps, sure. DS is in a small private school in the next district over. I don't really know how they work in the snow days.
