We are planning on going to WDW in December of 2006 for 12 days. We never had to worry about vacation and school before but now we do. My Daughter will be in 1st grade by then and I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on what to tell her school? Thanks

What is their policy for as to how many days she is allowed for abcence's?
1si grade is not to bad to miss some time, her teacher should be able to give you her make up work if any to either do before you go, during trip or when you come back. when our children were in elementary school had no problems
but whe we got to middle & High school they were more strict.

My son goes to a Military school so they are very lenient with days off and will let us do whatever we want basically. I know some schools are very strict about missing days if you aren't sick, it all depends on your school. The school hand book will let you know the policy, you could also call and ask the policy.

We pulled our boys out this past may for 7 days when we did our 7 day land and sea. Our boys are 1st & 3rd grade.

I told the teachers exactly what we were doing. They were really cool about it. Their teachers asked the boys to do a Journal entry everyday about their trips and ask them to share the journal and pictures with the class when they returned. It was fun for them.

:flower: We pulled our children out of school a couple years ago for a week. They did independent study and as long as all assignments were completed by the day they returned to school- they did not get marked absent and the school got paid. However, things are different now that my kids are teens. It is hard for them to do school work on their own without help/lecture from the teacher. ;)

It is our school policy that homework will not be given under any circumstance before a vacation. I agree...just check what the school's policy is.

And...have a great trip! :)

The school system I work for will not count you unexcused as long as you provide a note; it depends on the individual schools here. The principal of the school my daughter attends will allow make-up work/homework and will count WDW as an excused absence. He/she will still be counted absent but will not be turned in as unexcused. December is a lot of review/fun learning and not so much as new learning as being so close to a holiday/time off. As long as your child is not trying to attain perfect attendance for the year, I don't see any problems.

Have fun!!!

I teach high school, and we have a stricy policy on attendance. I encourage my students to travel. A student told me his parents beat the system by taking him out of the school officially and then re-enrolling him the following week, or whenever. The absences didn't count since the student was not officially attending at the time.

I took my girls out of school and told the teacher what we were doing. They were out for two weeks. The teacher gave them each an assignment of keeping a journal. Every day they had to write about something they learned and what they did at WDW. It was both fun and educational. Good luck, and boy am I jealous. Is it time to go yet??? :teacher:

I just told my Dd's teacher that she would miss 4 days. She informed me it would be considered an unexcused abscence but she would allow her to make up her work.

Our school allows for 10 days a year absence for vacation. We are planning on going again April/May 2007 when our kids will be in Kindergarten and 1st grades. As of now we are roughly planning that they will miss 8 days.

My DS will be missing the first week of school while we are at WDW. We are putting him on contracted study, so the school doesn't lose money and he doesn't have unexcused absences.

Tell them you will be on vacation, and ask them if she can take the classwork/homework with her.

My daughter a senior this year was very nervous about what her principal would say - we just knew that he wouldn't do it. But he did!!!!! He excused her for the 4 days that we would be gone.

My son in the 4th grade - his principal wouldn't. Now tell me that a 4th grader has a bigger work load than a senior. Whatever. Anyway he is missing and his teacher is sending work. He will just have to have a doctors note from now on when he misses, because in KY they can only have 6 unexecused absences.

We did this last year and our youngest (10) did fine but the 2 teens really struggled to catch up. Missing what the teacher's lecture or daily instructions are is hard, and you can't get it in a worksheet.
So to answer your questions: be up front w/ the school and tell them your plans, and ask for any work she may need, and plan your vacations when you want. UNTIL you kids are in their teens then you have to fit vacations into their schedule.
You'll have such fun in Dec. The beginning of Dec is already calling to me ( I need to wait 2 more years teens will be grads)
