scholarship essay help

i am currently writing an essay for a scholarship.
the essay should be about 1,000 words.
when i write essays for school, there is a limit on paragraphs, not words.
so, i need to know if in my 1,000 words, do i count words like "and", "the", "a", and whatnot.
any help would be great.

1000 words is probably 5 or 6 good paragraphs.
