I meant to post this 3 weeks ago when we got back and I forgot, but yes folks, it is possible to scam a grizzled old Disney vet.

Although we're AP holders and very frequent WDW visitors, we're not big on the waterparks and hadn't been to one for a good 6-7 years. We walked up to BB to buy our tickets for the day and I headed over to the automated touchpad machines to make the purchase.

As I typed in my order, there was a nice looking couple in their late twenties, standing at the machine next to me, looking flabbergasted at what their machine had apparently just spit out for them. They turned and told me that they had just accidentally bought 4 tickets when all they needed were two and asked if I had made my purchase yet. Now I little voice in my head told me that I should suggest that they walk over to the Guest Services desk, tell them their situation, and surely Disney would give them back their money...but no. At the guy's wife's request, I went ahead, after checking the date on the back of the ticket, and purchased the two adult tickets from him to help the poor sap out and then proceeded to buy the additional tickets I needed for our kids out of the machine. I don't think I need to tell you where the story goes from here.

We get to the gate, the kids all go through, easie peesie, and I get stopped. "Sorry, sir," the CM told me, "these are add-on tickets and are not valid for park entry." Man I was pissed, not because I was scammed out of $90 bucks, but because I didn't listen to the little voice in my head that told me that something was up. I told the CM that I understood, I know how the scammers love to prey on people at WDW and that I'd be more than happy to go back and buy new tickets. After all, my stupidity wasn't Disney's fault. I only asked for one thing...for the tickets back. I told the CM that I needed them because if when found the couple who sold us the bogus tickets (my wife saw them enter the park after our little "transaction"), I was going to personally ram them down the husband's throat. The CM told me to hold on for a second, and called the security manager out for a little chat. The manager was a really nice guy, took a description of the couple, and at his insistence, offered to let my wife and I into the park free of charge. I told him that I'd be more than happy to pay for the new tickets, but he wouldn't accept payment. He said that the kiosks are ripe for scammers and that he felt a bit responsible, as he knew that should have a CM out around the area, helping guests in these kinds of situation. I thanked him and he asked just one thing of me. He requested, with a chuckle, that if I see the couple, to please not forcibly ram anything down the man's throat, and to please contact a CM, as they would be looking for them as well. I agreed and off we went.

Unfortunately, we never did run into the couple in the park, but I figured that if I could do anything, it would be to remind everyone, no matter how often you hit WDW, to relax and have fun, but make sure that you listen to that little voice that tells you when something doesn't smell right and always keep an eye out for scammers.

Such a shame to read this. It was really nice of Disney to let you in for the day without charge... above and beyond IMO. Hope you were able to enjoy the day anyway.

Wow. That's a new one. These people will think of anything.

So sorry this happened, but glad Disney helped you out. And thanks for the heads up about this!

Sorry to hear of this, thanks for the heads up.

How awful for you! I would have never thought anything of it, either.

It's so nice of WDW to let you in for free. About a month ago I did a school presentation about WDW, and one of the things I raved about was their top notch customer service (I've never really had bad customer service at WDW, so I'm ONLY basing my feelings on my own personal experiences.)

Wow!! Thanks for posting this! What are add-on tickets?

Wow, some people should use their powers for good, not evil. I'm glad that Disney security let you in--you didn't do anything wrong. But I bet you felt pretty stupid--I know I did after a person scammed me out of $20 a few years ago.

You know, I haven't a clue. That's what I thought the CM called them, or something to that effect. They said it happens more often than they'd like to admit. I was too fired up to even think to ask for details.

I did. I must have said to my wife a dozen times that I know better than to fall for something like that. It was very cool for Disney to let us in free of charge though, way above and beyond.

Wow, I have heard of people selling on tickets but never scamming in a 'role play' situation

So pleased Disney looked after you, you handled the situation very very well.

Just sorry it happened to you.

Do people sit around and just think of bad things to do to people???

I dont get it at all.

Thankfully you got rewarded in the end.

WoW! Just wow!

I can't believe the couple decided to continue into Blizzard Beach - and enjoy their day (on your dime - or 900 dimes!) - guess they checked their odds and decided they wouldn't run into you. (You know when you are at a park and continually see the same people over and over?) I would think they would pull their scam - then leave. That certainly takes gall!

The other point that I can't believe is that they knew you had kids - who were looking forward to going to BB - what if you were on a tight budget and just didn't have the funds to buy two more adult tickets?! The more I think of the whole situation - I'm getting steamed for you!

Kudos for your handling of the situation and for Disney's Customers Service!

If you haven't bought tickets in awhile, here is how they are working.

Your base ticket is just for one park each day. If you want to park hop, or if you want a no expire option, or if you want to add a water park, these are add-ons to the base price.

I'd guess with the water park add-on you are issued two tickets, one for the theme parks and another just for water parks. This what they sold you.

I can't think that they even made much money because they had to purchase the add-on to begin with. I'm sure there is some discount on the ticket for bundling, but the discounts aren't that great.

Well, I went to look at the ticket prices to see how lucrative this scam could be and just got really confused. The discounts look like they might be really good, if you're buying passes for a week or more.

I think someone has done a lot of math to figure out the optimum purchase price.

I see...so said scammer buys a multi-day pass with add-ons at a huge discount, then hangs by the kiosk with a "Oops! I accidentally bought too many tickets out of the machine" story. Once he finds a willing park guest to "help out" and buy the add-on ticket at regular price, the scammer pockets the difference. I'd think if you went around selling all of your ad-on tickets with the intention of only going to the 4 main parks, you could probably recoup some serious coin. Now I know why Disney wanted to keep those tickets. I hope they were able to somehow track them down.

I'm wondering if the couple knew you wouldn't be able to use the tickets. It seems pretty dumb to scam you and then enter the park rather than leave... Why would they run the risk of getting caught?

I'm sorry this happened to you! :headache: Some people....but karma is a (you-know-what). :thumbsup2

Glad to hear that Disney stepped up and made it right!

I hope these people get caught. I remember once when we were going into Universal there was this sleezy guy at the entrance gate he had a ticket for himself and one for his sleezy mate(gf or ho I don't know). They had a child with them about 12 and they were trying to pass off a fast pass for a ticket. The woman at the gate told him it was a fast pass and he insisted that was what the ticket seller gave him which of course was bull. We all know the differnce between a fast pass for a ride and a pass to the park Just by what he was saying you knew he was a scam artist. Anyway, after much ado they LET HIM IN!! I wish I worked there. I would NEVER have let him in.

I must be having a "duh, what?" moment because I don't understand why the add-on tickets didn't work for admission. :confused3
