SCAD -Savannah College of Art and Design-- any experiences?

We went to a college fair this weekend and now it's the ONLY school my son wants to attend.

Private university... wow, the fees are HIGH, but they do offer exactly what he's interested in.

Any experiences anyone wants to share? I have a grad working here at my office and she's the only person I know personally.

We were looking into it at one time for DD and $30,000 sounds about right.

It is. It's miniscule compared to some schools like my sister who sent her daughter to Stanford, but WAY more than the very little I'd have to pay with the Georgia Hope scholarship at a Univ of Ga school. It's changed the whole picture for me.

You have the wrong information, golfgal. SCAD's website lists tuition as about 30K plus housing and other fees which bring it to a little over 40K per year.

SCAD is a fantastic school, Robin. I have friends who have had children attend SCAD. It has a great reputation, plus how can you not love being in Savannah?

Television Programming. The admissions person just about did a tap dance for him and his head is reeling. It's been a passion of his for most of his life and it's also my line of work. I had no idea that it was even offered but now it's all he talks about.

My niece is a Junior at SCAD and loves it! She's traveling to France to study for her last term this year. My son applied there and got in, he was offered almost half in scholarships, bringing it to equal our in state tuition. He would have to maintain a 3.0 GPA. He opted to go attend our local University that has a great art program. They gave him scholarships as well so it brought the tuition lower than SCAD.

I wanted my DS to attend Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota. It's 10 minutes from Siesta Key and if he attended there it would have given us reason to travel to Florida more! We toured SCAD and Ringling the summer before his junior year in high school. He is a freshman this year.

MY DS would like to attend SCAD for grad school.

On a side note......my niece and two of her friends were robbed at gun point, in the fall, by a young man with a shaky hand! They dropped everything and ran although her roommate did not want to hand over her sketchbook (it had her work in it). This was at the Savannah campus.

Keep in mind it is expensive, but there are lots of scholarships the school offers. If he has good grades he can get a academic scholarship ranging from $3,000 to $10,000 per year. They also have scholarships based on the portfolio.

Let him apply and see what happens. You never know.

Actually, though we LOVE Savannah, the program he's looking into is right here in Atlanta. He can opt to take some courses in Savannah, of course, which is our favorite other city.

My dd had a friend who was accepted and planning to go, but in the end the high price tag (family from very modest means) caused her not to go, even with scholarship money offered.

Another friend has been considering it for her dd, but they have pretty much settled on a state school that has an excellent art program instead (ECU). She also likes the idea that if her dd doesn't want to pursue only art she'll have other options.

Can you push for state school on scholarship and offer up the option of grad school later on?

Well, just to prepare you: even with the Hope scholarship, it's turning out to be a decent chunk of change. We still have to pay for housing, meals, fees, and books which is running about $10,000 a year. Now don't get me wrong, I realize that is very little compared to what the average college education costs. It's just that I was initially under the impression that, with HOPE, the cost of their college education would be next to nothing, but I was wrong.

Sorry about the robbery, wow, I'm glad they're okay. All major cities have some issues, I grew up in NY so I am very aware of that. The Atlanta area has its share of crimes, too.

Yes, I do know about the other fees. My school was tuition free and my parents still had to dole out a lot of money. My sister's daughter had a full scholarship and she still had to rely on loans and financial aid for the other stuff. I thought I was ready for all this but it gets more complicated and intense every day!

I found the $18,000 on some college ranking website that came up when I did a search. Even at $30K that is low for a private school. Keep in mind, private schools often end up LESS expensive because they have more money to give. That whatever website also listed that 98% of their students (if this is right) receive aid. That is a pretty good number for that too.

Looks like we may have to take that route. His counselor is sure we can get more than enough to get him in but I'm considering every route.

That sounds like clown college!! Is there really a clown college because that's where I've been telling my DD that she's headed!

That sounds like clown college!! Is there really a clown college because that's where I've been telling my DD that she's headed!

NO, it's actually a decent little art college, HOWEVER it's owned (or run or named, not sure of it's acutal history) by the same Ringling family that performs in circuses. The Ringling family seems to be a prominent family in Sarasota.

Anyone here from Sarasota that can clear this information up................
