Okay, so mostly I lurk here, and I go to your links to see your pages. I have gotten a lot of really good ideas!!!

Timon-you are amazing in what you put together on your Disney pages!

I see that a lot of people use computer fonts to type up journalling. It definitely looks much better than my handwritting, although I see the scrapbooking value in preserving that for my future kids, etc.

Where do you get the great fonts? What are you printing them on? Obviously, acid-free, etc, but I thougt that inkjet printers did not have the longevity to withstand time.

Also...how the heck do you print on vellum. I tried once on my inkjet and it just basically ran and smeared.

Any tips? Thanks

I hate my handwriting, which is why I use the computer. Some people don't like using the computer because they DO want to keep their writing in their album. It's up to you, just do what you feel is right for you! That is something I have learned over the last 2 years...do what is right for YOU, everybody has their opinion. I print on cardstock I get from SB stores. I don't use special ink, but I am not that concerned about it lasting forever. Maybe if I have kids one day, they might like to keep them but I do my albums for me and my husband. It gives me a creative outlet and I have fun doing it. I'm sure it won't last forever, but I think it will last long enough.

Printing on vellum can be tricky. What I do is change the ink setting on my printer options. You can have heavy, medium and light amounts of ink. I always use the lightest and you have to let it dry overnight or it WILL smudge! You can see on some of my pages where it did smudge, so I don't use vellum all that much.

Btw, almost all my fonts are downloaded free off the internet. Just do a search and you will find thousands of cool free SB'ing fonts to use! I spent a WHOLE day doing that and I have WAY TOO MANY fonts now LOL!

Thanks Timon, some great tips! I guess the way I look at it is if it starts to fade I can maybe redo...but that will be what, in like 40 years??? By then, my kids can redo if they like! LOL!!

I'll try your vellum trick and see if it works. I also thought about taking it to work and photocoping onto the vellum....but I dont want to bust the company's machine!!

I'll poke on-line for some fonts.

Thanks again!

I've used both laserjets and inkjets. I prefer the laser jet because I can print on vellum, which I do often and it doesn't smear. When I print on inkjets, which is what I use at home...I have to let it dry completely before messing with it so that it doesn't smear, just like Timon said.

Timon: I love your scrap pages!

Printing on vellum can be tricky.

Some vellum (not all) is treated on one side which makes printing even more difficult. In the case of "treated" vellum, one side is shinier than the other; you want to print on the non-shiny side. In terms of other vellum, just as the previous posters said, try lightening the amount of ink used -- either by changing the print quality (low/medium/high) or by changing the font color itself to a medium gray tone (that is what I do). Depending on your printer and the amount of ink, you may have to let it set for several hours. I have an HP inkjet printer and print on vellum frequently. By setting my printer to a gray scale, I have had a lot of success and it is usually dried within 20 minutes or so. You also want to think about the font you are using. If it is a very heavy/dense font (bold letters for example) that will use more ink and will take longer to dry and increase the risk of smearing.

Good luck!

99% of my journaling is done by the computer because I HATE my handwriting. I do a lot of it on vellum to use as an overlay for an embellishment because I really like that look, but I also print on cardstock...just change the setting in your printer options in the "Paper" area to cardstock and it works like a charm.

I get most of my fonts from free download sites, but I am totally addicted to the 2Peas fonts so every month I treat myself to one or two of theirs.

Lastly, if I do print out my journaling on regular white paper, I usually jazz up the edges with either pen lines or chalking. It makes it look less "sterile" in my opinion.

Another option would be to invest in a set of Rubber Stamp letters. With a coupon at Michael's or AC Moore you can pick them up pretty inexpensively...I even got a set a Wal-mart for under $ 10!!!

I do have some layouts in the photo gallery on this board but I have no idea how to add a link.

the trick I learned re: printing on vellum is to change the printer settings from plain paper (or premium paper) to transparency! it uses less ink automatically and very rarely smears (except if you are trying to print on very shiny vellum which never seems to work for me no matter what I do!)

as for downloading fonts---I found some great Disney style fonts just by doing a google search (for Disney fonts ) others I have found by searching for free fonts and still others I have purchased via Creating Keepsakes (I have one of their compilation font CD's which I love. ). have fun!

I have to add to this:

I have downloaded several fonts recently and am very happy with the computer journaling. Especially oppsed to my hand writing ;)

I recently did a hidden mickey page and cheated and not only did the Title using the computer, but added some graphics to the title at the same time. HERE is a link to the page.

I have also used the computer to do some journaling for some other pages. I did a 2 page on my nephew's 1st Bday. And had a picture of him holding balloons and then added some ballons to the layout. Then I found the perfect font to go with it, letters in baloons, and so I did his name in them, and then added strings to the letters by hand to add a little touch to them.

I print nearly all my journalling on vellum - i don't know if it's my printer (canon) or the vellum I use, but i have no bother with smearing.
I tend to use 8x11 vellum that I get in multi-packs,

another good tip is to print on paper, and then hermafix a scrap of vellum/cardstock/patterned paper over the print out, and put the page back through the printer, this way you can print on quite small scraps.

we have3 links to lots of fonts on UKscrappers - MaryAnne (Our librarian) seeks out good ones and posts them every week.

Hey MikeScott8-
Just wanted to say that I *love* that hidden mickey layout! What a super idea! Loved the "hidden mickey" in the title and the way you used the wheel. I just may have to scrap-lift that (if you don't mind).

Have a great weekend!

JennC,

Thanks for the comments. Being a realtive new scrapper I would be honored to have someone scraplift from me ;)

BUT the wheel is a kit I bought. I posted a thread showing the steps as I did the page. HERE is a link to the thread.

So if you used the wheel is not really scraplifting from me, but the title I am really pleased with. I orignally tried finding a font where I could use the circles of the "d"s and the round shape of the "e" to make a hidden mickey and then shade around it to emphasis it, but couldn't find a good font so I just used the Mickey font and added the circles.

I took the page to the LSS I got the kit from the other day and showed the owner and she showed it to the customer she was ringing up at the time. They both liked it too.

Mike

Hey Mike --
I saw your thread about the kit and was intrigued. I work at a LSS that sells the kits but couldn't think of any good layouts where I could use it. Your layout inspired me to give it a try!

Thanks again for sharing!

I just wanted to mention briefly that I LOVE my DW handwriting and that don't use the computer for everything, 'cause your handwriting is an extention of yourself.
You're handwriting changes over time (look back over your scrapbooks already!) and it's nice to think back for us romantic types that when this was written at the point of time when your creative journalistic scrapbooking juices took hold, you were
doing this personally.

I guarantee that your scrapbook, if done well and stored properly will be cherished heirlooms probably.

I would hate to not see some sort of handwriting somewhere in a scrapbook, that's the personal touch.

I also use my computer todo most journal but You all need to remember that what we do are gifts to the future. We do need to add our personal touch so PLEASE use some of your own . good or not its yours. and it will be wanted.
