Say your kid broke a window. . .

If my child broke a window while at someone else's house, I'd expect to pay for the damages. While it might have been an accident, my child caused the accident and b/c I'm responsible for my child and his/her actions, I'm responsible for paying for the damages.

We broke windows (a few) in a neighbor's home that was behind my grandmother's house. Our parents were in the grandmother's house. The parents of all the kids playing paid to replace the window. Yes we knew who actually broke it, but we were all playing.

That's a good point. All the boys were playing and it could have happened to any of them. Just happened to be a certain one. I think it's fine if they all pitch in. They were all using bad judgement and at 13yo, they should know that. But of course, 13yo's are not known for their good judgement. :teeth:

You break it, you buy it.

Is it a special kind of window or glass that it will be so expensive?

I think it's unlikely the window has to be replaced, just the glass. And I think this homeowner is factoring in the cost of having the window replaced vs. the glass.

If this is indeed the case then I could have a problem with paying if it were my child also. I might or might not voluntarily pay it, really depends on why they were trying to replace the whole window vs the glass.

We just replaced an energy efficient window and it was well over $1,000 for a 48" x 36" window. If someone broke our window I would expect it to be replaced with the same window. Glass may cost less than $1,000, but if it was double pane with inert gas in between the panes, then the entire window must be replaced.

What's with the mom of the boy who broke it? Whatever the window costs, she's basically sacrificing a friendship over the cost. Not to mention that offering to pay at least half is the minimum decent thing to do.

I haven't read the replys, but the the visiting friends parents homeowners insurance should cover the window replacement.

I think that if that happened at my house, I would expect the visiting kids parents to pay half of the cost. At 13, the homeowners child should know better than to hit golf balls in the yard and imo, is just as responsible for the accident.
