Have any brides used this service? We are in the middle of it, and we are at the point where we need to find a "notary" to sign and "seal" our documents. Can anyone explain to me exactly what this is?

Thanks!

A notary public is a person who is appointed by the government to witness and authenticate signatures, among other things. They then stamp the document with a raised seal to show that they witnessed the signatures.

In the US you can usually find notaries at shipping centers and banks. If your bank has a notary on staff you may be able to use his/her services for free. Also, many business have someone on their staff become a notary, so you might ask around at the place where you work.

ME!! ME!! I am a Notary!!

Banks usually have them. You need to bring a Driver's License or Passport as Identification. DO NOT SIGN THE DOCUMENT until the Notary tells you to. This is VERY important..the point of a Notary is to attest that the person did in fact sign the document. I can't tell you how many people bring something to me already signed and want me to notarize it for them.

ETA - Raised seals are no longer required..mine is a rubber seal that looks like this

Thanks for the help ladies. I think in Canada it is a lot different, since anyone can sign important documents (like passports) here. I'll go to the bank today and see if they can do it.

Thanks a lot :goodvibes

usually, if you don't have a notary available, you can have 2 witnesses attest to it..but not all documents work like that

I just looked it up, apparently there are such things as Notary Public here, but you need to pay someone to do it (it looks like all the ones listed are lawyers). Ughh..one more expense to add on I guess!

I can charge for my notary but in Florida, you are regulated to how much you can charge. When I marry someone, I think it is $10 but I have been given a "gift" as a thank you

99.9% of the time, I don't charge. My company pays for my bond and fee because I use it for work mostly..but in the State of Florida, the Notary belongs to the person not the company.
