My niece is using the Saxon Math book. Can anyone confirm/deny for me that what she's calling "Mixed fractions" is actually "improper fractions"? I ask for several reasons. One is that her teacher won't allow her to take the book home, so my sister isn't able to directly help. Two, the teacher doesn't show them HOW to do it, just tells them TO do it. I've ordered the text for them, but it'll be at least a week before it arrives. In the mean time I want to be sure I'm helping her out. The text example my niece gives me is of a ruler. An arrow is pointing to what I would call 3 1/2. That answer (I'm told) is wrong. My next response would be 7/2. That one she'll ask her teacher about.

Any help?

Ashley

Mixed fractions are more than one whole... 2 3/4, 6 7/8, etc.

Improper fractions are also more than one whole but need to be put in lowest terms. 6/4 = 1 1/2, etc.

Try taking a look at this page Saxon Math and see if it will help you. We used Saxon for a while in our county but got rid of it a year or so ago. Good luck. :)

Can I ask why you got rid of it? Our schools use it and I'm trying to get opinions from other teachers and parents.

Thanks!

My son goes to a private school for learning disabilities and he gets Saxon Math. It seems like a good program to me. (Former teacher) All of his worksheets have a word problem, temp., money, measurement, add/subt., estimation, graphing etc. They don't just learn a chapter and move on. The concept learned in that chapter is included on all worksheets so they won't forget what they have learned.

Our school's TAG program started self-paced Saxon math several years ago. The kids basically teach themselves and progress as quickly as they want to.

We had a great experience with both of our sons.... they are each 3+ years ahead of grade level in Saxon. The school dropped the program so we proceeded with the homeschool version.

Saxon is very popular in the home school comunity. We love it. I love their 1st grade text. DD is learning so much, and I love that it repeats concepts so they don't forget them.
