Saw something on ebay that disturbs me

Collecting the name tags is one thing; wearing one of them to DLR, with someone else's name on it, is another.

I know of no business that would want someone walking around their business with a name tag if they were not an employee.
Just seems strange to me.

I thought they used to sell CM looking name tags in their store. I am pretty sure I remember this.

Neither are really good options if you think about it. It's better to simply be aware and use common sense than overreact or be naive.

we need a "LIKE" button here.

I couldn't agree more. Now I will preface my response with this - NO I do NOT have children by choice however so your mileage may vary.

I personally feel that with the digital age/social media , etc we are just more aware of things as they happen because there is no downtime between events happening and hearing about it. The world has changed - most definitely and there is nothing wrong with being aware , however that in itself has always been good advice.

Fear mongering ( NOT saying this discussion is) is so easy to happen because the more we try to protect ourselves the more easily it is to become truly fearful. Look at the website Webmd for example. If you have a sore throat you might have throat cancer or you might have strep or just a common cold. There is such a thing as too much information and reading into things. There is also a fine line between being informed and being over protective and over worried about every single possibility out there.

I will also mention I too got lost at WDW when I was on a field trip with a girl scout trip. I was only about 8 or 9 years old. Now I was lucky - two wonderful ladies found me and asked me why I was crying and if I was okay - I explained the best I could and they took me in hand to where I thought they ran to ( it was near IASW) - where I actually found my troop leader waiting. I will never forget that kindness. Now this could have ended badly - yes it's true however when I was a scared lonely kid..I didn't remember the things my mom told me to do safety wise. I do think it is important to go over these things often with children so they won't panic , or hopefully won't but until it happens unfortunately we as people - including as children never know how we will react. It's great there are so many looking out for one another and extra safety precautions out there - but this could also be a case of a Disney fan enjoying collecting and selling merchandise. Unless any of us knows their intent personally - it is unfair to pass judgement.

I definitely understand the intention the OP had though I agree more with the fact I feel it is being a bit dramatic. People buy and sell memorabilia all the time. It's frankly no different. If you feel the store is such a danger then feel free to email Ebay - I am sure they have a link to contact them also.

Now if you witnessed someone IN THE PARKS - you felt was impersonating then by all means I could understand this post much more. But as they have a strict rule of adults wearing costumes , I would believe that what you describe would fall under that. Even with events like the 24 hour show my Disney side , I have to be believe someone strolling up in a full ensemble that looked like a CM would be caught before even entering the gates. I mean it's not like they can just walk in like a department store and gain access.

The other thing I want to say is just because a family is there does not make it any more safe than say a single individual - male or female. There are all sorts of "bad" people out there in the world , and just because they do or do not have kids with them is NOT a good qualifying factor. Quite frankly I don't know "you". "You" could be anyone or anything but can I worry about it ? Nope. If I feel uncomfortable - even as an ADULT - I tell someone. There is no shame in that. There was wonderful advice about seeking a ride CM as well as the advice about seeking someone behind a counter.

Only "you" as a parent/guardian/relative - whatever can decide what type of precautions and safety discussion and actions are appropriate for your child and age but it is never too early to start. There is no one size fits all solution.

For adults you hear stories about people impersonating police for example all the time and pulling people over - so safety and common sense never really changes it just evolves as we age. There are avenues where people can get anything they want if the price is right so we have to take it upon ourselves to be smart about it.

Anything CAN happen but it doesn't mean it WILL happen.

Just my 2 cents.

No employee was raped at the Art of Animation Resort. It was an alleged ATTEMPTED rape. A cleaning lady entered a room to clean it by herself and a man was in there, held a knife to her, and she fled.

This is a COMPLETELY different situation than, say, someone being accosted on Tom Sawyer's Island. Yes, it's horrible and bad. But that's life, and there is NOTHING an employer can do about this. There will be situations in ANY job that someone is alone unless we're monitored 24/7 on video in every nook and crevice.

Please keep the cameras out of my nooks and crevices, please and thank you.

I can't imagine a person buying some old name tag just so they could go stand around disney world on the off chance a lost child happens to come to them looking for mommy. This is overthinking to the max. Could it happen? I guess. I think the likelihood of someone actually pulling this idiotic sham off is about 1 in a million.

I was looking around on ebay and discovered that there are many authentic Disney CM name tags for sale.
This bothers me because we tell our kids to find someone wearing a CM name tag if they get lost or need help. After seeing these tags for sale, I will not be telling my grandkids to do that. I will tell them to go into a shop and talk to the person behind the counter.
There were also some authentic CM clothes for sale.
Very creepy to me.

I understand making the connection between seeing CM name tags for sale on ebay and choosing to instruct your grandchildren differently, but why is the selling of Disney collectible items creepy?

USING said items in a harmful way is creepy. Selling and buying them is all just part of the Disney fanatical world that exists out there.

I do not think I said that collecting is creepy.
But buying a name tag with a name on it that is not yours, and then wearing it to DLR, just seems odd. If I wanted to wear a Disney pin, it would not be a name tag.
Of course there are so many for sale that I am sure a person could find one with his name on it. I saw one seller on ebay who was offering tags with every name you could think of from A to Z.

But, who says they buy it to wear it in the park. What the others have said is that people buy it to put into their Disneyana collections.. that's it.

Unfortunately, I think we have been negatively affected by the 24-hour news cycle that we have. Now we hear about every bad thing that happens to anyone. The likelihood of there being any sort of problem is so slim. Statistically, kids are kidnapped more by people they know than strangers. I think I will just continue to instruct our daughter to talk to someone with a Disney name tag.

Someone should report those listings to Disney. I would think that the nametags are considered part of the provided uniform. Of course, "Brittany from Columbus" will only work there once, so they may let them keep their nametags..But, if people are turning around and selling them, thats kinda a bummer. Its not safe. Report the listings.

Huh? How is it not safe, and why would ebay care? You can buy ACTUAL CM wardrobes on fleabay. A nametag you could have made up at the local t-shirt shop

I agree!!!

You can buy a police uniform and badges, but we are going to be worried about a CM name tag?

Actually, you can NOT buy Police badges (or MANY police items) on ebay, because they are BANNED items. For safety reasons, of course. Why is it not safe? Because 'knock knock' there's a pedophile at your hotel door wearing a Disney outfit and namebadge that he bought on ebay.
Reporting them to DISNEY, not ebay, for having and selling Disney property on ebay could be cause for removal.

Honestly, Disney really doesn't care. If they did, they wouldn't have the Collector Forum at the D23 Expo, and they would get the Disneyana Show and Sale shut down. And besides, the handful of costumes that leak into the secondary market each year are nothing compared to the tens of thousands of costumes that the company destroys every year when they wear out. The only real time the Company pursues online listings is when they get a tip that a current employee is taking items home and selling them. The cost of paying someone to peruse the hundreds of thousands of online listings and to haggle with eBay far outweighs the actual value of said items. It just isn't worth it to the Company.

This, and I'm not saying to the OP, or anyone else it COULDN'T happen, but in 59 years how many times have you heard of it happening? By all means coach your children, and be vigilant, and if they're too young to understand, NEVER let them out of your sight. Hate to say it, but we now have given the idea out on the WWW for all to see.

Do you leave your young children alone unsupervised in your room?

Who's to say there aren't pedophiles WORKING for DLR?

Again, I'm not saying don't be careful, but I forgot to mention that statistically, most child abductions in the US are by a separated, or divorced parent.
