I was wondering if any of you fellow Aussies would be willing to share tips for saving up for your Disney holidays. I know there is a budget board on here, but since we have to consider the hefty cost of airfare, I thought I'd ask specifically here.

So do you have any tips you can share, what keeps you motivated to keep saving etc...Do you stick to a strict budget or have a separate holiday account...

We have a separate account. Each pay I put aside the same amount. I'll keep saving on return from this trip so when we make a decision to go I'll have at least the air fare possibly more set aside.

I also guess the price of a trip 18 months out and update when I do my yearly budget end of June and mid year review in December when I do not have something definitey planned. I err on the side of caution for the $$$. If I was planning a trip now for April 2013 into Vancover, across to Niagra Falls then New York, Washington, Seatless for Boeing than SF and drive to Disneyland say I guess a trip in 18 months is $36000, I'll start putting $2000 aside each month - easy figure to work with here- I have no idea yet really. Say then at the next review and the cost has gone up I'll readjust. My current au$ is based at .80c for long term undefined trips, though the above sounds a little defined and we may just have to do it next

And it gives me something to do while I wait for it to come around.

$36K!!!! Blimey, I was hoping to do ours around $20K for the five of us (incl FF's for main flights).

I do a similar thing - I have a seperate holiday account and transfer $500 in every 2 weeks when DH gets paid. We're aiming for a big combined US/Canada trip at Christmas 2014, whcih seems like ages away and too early to do too much real planning, so at least I feel like I am doing somethign towards it. And I want to have the money ready to go when we need it.

I want to go back next year maybe with a cruise and / or a trip to New Orleans. My hubby wants to wait 2 years. I guess I will have to save harder..lol.

We're going 2015, so I don't think you are planning too early at all :lmao:

I don't think it will be that much, but it may get close as we're looking at perhaps 3-4 weeks which will include 7-10 nights in New York.

Ah, that makes me feel a little better. We're planning on at least 4 weeks too, but we won't be going to New York. DH does not like big cities.

Considering the long term average of the Australian dollar is 75c, I buy US currency whenever I save a few thousand. A separate savings account is a fair thought too. But actually having something concrete in your hands, be it a Disney ticket or airline ticket certainly increases the motivation!! And keep looking at the Dis boards because you certainly cant help but get envious as all hell when everyone else seems to be heading off and leaving you behind!!!!! Well at least I do!!!

Great motivation indeed :thumbsup2
My problem is every time I start to plan a trip it just gets bigger and I need to replan ;)
