Saving change

Just a tip I thought I would share.....
We have been putting spare change and extra bills ( a dollar or so) into a piggy bank for spending money for our Disney trip... and we have saved $160 in a little over a month!!! This was effortless, just putting in spare change and a dollar or so here and there. What I do is only buy things with dollar bills and save the change to put into the piggy... I can't believe it has added up so fast!

We are doing to same for our cruise and also saving $20 a week ( I already have our tip $ saved) plus everytime our DDprincess: doesn't ask for a "treat" when we go shopping we put $5 in, so she is learning the value of her patience.

We also use a change jar, I agree, a great way to save! When we make our own pizza instead of ordering we put the equivalent in $ in the jar. Our property taxes are split into 10 monthly payments so the other 2 months we 'pay' it to out Disney fund. It's amazing how much you can save playing the 'saving mental games'. It is a great tool to teach your kids how to save as Lisa pointed out!

We've been doing this for years. It's amazing how much money collects!! We'll be rolling it soon. I can't wait to see how much we have this time. :earboy2:

counted mine last night...i have 157.60..only have been saving for a couple of months!! still have 3 months to go!

I did that with a GIANT bank for about 6 years. I would never use my change at the stores, then dump it in the bank. Whenever I got a nice new crisp bill, I would drop it in there, too. Once I got a $100 bill-dropped it in.....Sounds great, huh??? Well, I now do NOT have the time to empty this thing and count all that change. I have an automatic change counter that rolls the coins automatically, but even that takes a lot of time. I have rolled/counted about 1/4 of the contents, and have gotten about $600 out of it (I had a lot of bills!). I wish I could just take the bank to my bank and say "here, deposit this", but I don't think that would work.. If I ever do this again, I am going to keep up with the rolling better-to do it all at once would take DAYS!

Taking it to one of those machines in the grocery store to me is Piracy-they keep 10%!!

My DH doesn't get the concept-he doesn't think of it as "found" money. So I have to hide it from him....;)

We do the same thing and average about $100 per month. We go to Disney once a year so that's $1200 of savings that we really don't even feel.

Check with your bank. Ours will take loose change. We asked before we started our change jar so we knew what we would be up against. Some banks have a change counter similar to the ones in the grocery stores, and those banks typically will take the loose change. It never hurts to ask!

We have dd saving her change and grandparent donations instead of wasting it on "treats". Then, right before we leave we're going to take it to a Disney store and ger her disney dollars. That way she can buy what she wants to on vacation and not hit us up for everything she sees.

It's a great idea and we wish we'd thought of it sooner!

Enjoy! Happy saving!

i agree we do it every year each day we come in and empty all change into a mop bucket we cash it in right before vacation clost to 1000 last year

Isn't it great?! It's hard to believe that much money accumulates from change!

Last year, we flew to Vegas for a long weekend with change we had been saving for a few years.

It started out as a joke that the change would be for our daughters' "college fund". Maybe we'll start that next year!:teeth: (shame on us)
