'Save the date' wedding card - reply?

We've been sent a 'save the date' card for the wedding of the son of some friends, taking place in December.

Should we reply? It doesn't say RSVP but, never having received one of these before, I'm not sure what I'm supposed to do. We have already spoken with the friends and they know that we're planning to attend - do I need to do anything more before the actual invitation arrives?

Hi Hil,

Never heard of these, but just looked it up and it appears they are very popular in the States and becoming more so over here. They are sent out much earlier, to allow people that may need to travel, or away a lot to save that date. The article I did read says they dont need replys and are normally followed some weeks/months later by the more formal invatation.

i was just about to say the same thing as sue, they're mainly just to let people know the date a while before the actual invitations are sent out, that way it gives you much more time to figure out if you're going or not.

No, Hilary, you don't need to reply. As others have said, it is just to let you know the date far enough in advance so you can keep it free.

I agree I am just about to send them out for our at home reception, and don't expect a reply - but hopefully our guests will put it in their diaries!
