In addition to getting a pretty good rate at Holiday Inn Family Suites last August, I found a way to save a little additional over the weekend.
Holiday Inn has something they call Weekend Websavers. Go to their site and sign up for it to receive weekly emails of specials good only over the weekend.
What they do is on the Wednesday prior to each weekend they offer rooms at hotels that have a lot of vacancy for the coming weekend.
I made my reservations, and then signed up for the Weekend Websavers. On the Wednesday before my trip, I checked for the Holiday Inn Family Suites on the list of hotels participating that weekend. It was on the list for the weekend we were going, in fact the Family Suites shows up on the list a lot. I then simply called 1-800-HOLIDAY and told them I had reservations but wanted my weekend nights changed to the websavers rate. They did it and I saved an additional $11 a night for the weekend nights.
Of course, when the hotel is very full, this won't work, but HIFS generally shows up a lot, and it's a way to easily save money without changing your original reservation.
