I have bookmarked several threads as reference for our upcoming HHI trip, but I guess I don't have any regarding Savannah. Anyone care to share ideas for places to see and eat? Since we will probably only do a day trip from HHI, we are thinking of doing a once-around on a trolley tour, then using our car to return to a couple of highlights. Or maybe others have a better suggestion??

We did a day trip to Savannah a couple of years ago. We did a trolley tour, which was good. We ate at The Lady & Sons, because we were all fans of Paula Dean and didn't want to go to Savannah without doing that! I've also read good things about Miss Wilkes Boarding House (or something like that) as another Savannah tradition. I would love to have spent a couple of days really sight-seeing in Savannah, but the day trip was a nice thing to do!

Trolley Tour is great overview.

Lady & Sons is good but arrive early. Miss Wilkes is my personal favorite. Great "southern food" (Neither Paula or Miss Wilkes have ever heard the word "Healthly" LOL! If they can put butter, bacon fat or some other fat in the dish it's in there and it's SO SO GOOD!)

I think the Trolley Tour includes one historic home? I always go to the Juliette Low Birthplace, but that's because I am a Girl Scout LOL!

The riverfront area is great and the trolley tour does not do it justice so you can always walk down there. River Street Chocolates (or candies? Not 100% of the last part of then name) has the BEST stuff. Don't miss the paralines!

Savannah is a beautiful city just to walk around and enjoy.....

Thanks for the tips. I will print these out to take along. We are excited about our first trip to this part of the world!

I'm hoping (fingers crossed) to get HHI reservations around Christmas. Would a day trip to Savannah be worthwhile at that time? princess:

I have not Savannah at Christmas, but I understand that a lot of the homes "decorate" for Christmas so I bet it would be very nice!

Lady and Sons is a must, but Savannah is just full of good restaurants. The Pirates House is also there. This is the oldest restaurant and I believe Building in the country. There is part of it where the floors are uneven. The pirates use to come to use it as a Tavern. Visit the River Front, there are stores and restaurants all along it. You can sit and watch the big ships come in. When we stay in Savannah (it's been a few years) we stay on the River front. I love watching all the Ship activity. There are stores all within walking distance of this area too.

if you have a little extra time and Lady and Sons is really crowded, consider driving out towards Tybee and having lunch at Uncle Bubba's (also owned by Paula Dean). It usually isn't as crowded, you can call ahead for reservations. It is located on the river and the setting is very relaxing. The char-grilled oysters are absolutely wonderful and the serving sizes are great. The Key Lime pie is outstanding. http://www.unclebubbas.com/ is the website which includes the menu.

and enjoy your trip y'all!

If you go to Lady and Sons, arrive around 8:30 am to get your name on the lunch list. We did this then walked around Savannah and enjoyed the sites. Most things are within walking near the restaurant. If you prefer dinner, be there at 3 to get your name on the list. We have been twice and enjoyed both times. We got the buffet. MMMM good!!

Three is TOO late for dinner

I got there at 1 yesterday. Got on the dinner list ONLY by agreeing to sit in the lounge. Earliest seating left at 3 outside the lounge was 9 and there were VERY few 'bar' seats left.

It was fun, but it goes in the "been there done that" LOL!

I haven't heard of the Trolley tour. Is it thru the City? Do you need to reserve ahead?

Thanks once again to everyone for taking the time to post. We leave in the morning and I have printed the suggestions to take along. :thumbsup2

The Trolleys' go around the city and have numerous stops where you can get on and off. There are two main companies. (one's green and one's white)

No reservations just pay when you show up! You won't be able to miss them!
