Anyone shop at Sav-A-Lot? There is one in our town now and I would like to know how the meats, fresh veggies and fruit are. This is the only "lower price", for lack of a better term, grocery store in our immediate area. Any info about your shopping experiences will be appreciated.

I did a search and found an older thread about Sav-A-Lot and Aldi's. Much more info. about Aldi's than Sav-A-Lot.

Thanks a lot for the help.

Our Save A Lots are disgusting. Filthy to an extreme. They also have armed guards at the door if that says anything.

It just depends on the store. All of the ones in my town are horrible. The one where my aunt lives is great. Why not just go to the store and check it out for yourself?

I think you just need to check out the individual store to know if it's going to be good, clean, fresh, etc. I know that a lot of people post here on the DIS about how great Aldi is and that they love shopping there, but my local Aldi is not very clean and does not have good fresh produce (but does have lots of fruit flies) so it varies a lot based on the manager and the location.

So yeah, give it a whirl and make your own decision. Take a little while to wander around the store, check the prices, look at the veggies, etc. because your local store might be much different than the one the next town over.

My mom has a brand-new store nearby and likes it quite a bit, as do her friends. The main things she says is there's no clutter in the aisles and the prices are good on produce and meat.

I agree check out your store. We used to live near one, and it was terrible. I'm sure others are better.

We have one in our town that is new but I don't buy my produce or meat there. But I will stop in to pick up a forgotten item or two cause I can get in and out in a jiffy. One thing I've noticed with some of the frozen food is that the price might be cheaper but the quantity is smaller so its actually more expensive.

I will say I buy my nacho chips there, Verde is the name of them and they are 1.50 for a big bag, but I forget the ounces but cheaper than a grocery store and they taste good. That's about all the experience I have with Sav-A-Lot.

thanks for the replies. I, of course, plan to check out the new store but just wanted a heads up from anyone who had shopped the chain.

My Save-a-Lot doesn't have a very good produce select. However, I have had days where I've found good produce. The meat is good. A lot of things are hit or miss at my store. They don't always carry the same name brands so I have to watch and see when it comes in. The milk in my store is more expensive than our other stores in the area. Be sure and check the expiration dates on things. I've found some that are expired. Most of what I buy at Save-a-Lot are paper products and toiletries. They have good deals on those.

I stopped shopping there just couldn't find good quality meat or produce, I have better luck at Aldis. I may go back to pick up some tortilla chips though and try those out!
