I made this last nite because it was such a yucky first day of Spring! My family really likes it, and they're usually not crazy about soups. I got this recipe from the radio when I was driving to work one day (anybody else listen to Lauren & Wally out of Boston?). They gave no real measurements, but I don't think you have to. This is what I used last nite:
Sausage Soup
2 pkg. (6 links each) sweet Italian sausage
3 medium onions, thinly sliced
chopped garlic to taste
dried basil to taste
2 cans whole tomatoes
2 cans chicken broth
1 can beer
Remove sausage from casings. Cook for five to ten minutes, add onion. When sausage is no longer pink and onions are just about clear, add garlic and basil. Stir and cook for a couple minutes. Add tomatoes, chicken broth, and beer. Let simmer and serve with warm bread or rolls.
Enjoy!
