Tried asking questions at a local kiosk but the young boys behind the counter were too busy texting to answer questions.

Should I look at adding texting to my phone while in WDW for the few times we would need it (contact info for swaps and such) OR how expensive is it to use for a couple of minute phone calls?

Thanks

When I used to live in SK, my cell phone was thru Sasktel Mobility. If I recall correctly, it was around a $1/min to make calls from the States to Canada.

Because there are so many different carriers in the US, you should be able to text at a "per-text" cost. For the few texts you would send, you shouldn't need a plan per se, however, if you have a Blackberry, my MTS Mobility Blackberry gets confused in the US and reverts to analog....

A trick I learned to reset your phone/blackberry is to remove the battery and leave it out for 15 seconds, then replace it - your phone then "resets" or "reboots" to the digital system. Magical!:wizard:

It depends on your carrier - some have plans with unlimited texting, or texting packages you can add on to give your unlimited texting. Looking at the Sasktel Mobility website - I found this information on adding texting to your plan.

Texting is just the cost it would normally be for your plan. For example, I have 100 free text and ater that it is 15 cents a text. This is the same in US or Canada for my plan.

The PP's are correct. There is no roaming and it is 95 cents per minute.

Hi hopeis, we are just back from WDW and was catching up on the Canadian board when I saw this. I think I can answer this for you. If you have no texting plan then the pay per use is .15 per message sent. There is no charge to receive messages. This applies to anywhere in Canada or the U.S.

Here is some information from SaskTel's website.
With Text Messaging service, you can:

  • Use your cellular phone to send and receive text messages to and from SaskTel text messaging subscribers, and most other cellular providers' text messaging subscribers throughout Canada, the U.S., and select countries around the world.
Pricing:

Received messages are FREE!

Choose from three Text Messaging packages:
Pay Per Use 15¢ per sent message
Sending text messages is included with all wireless service plans on a pay per use basis.

Basic
$6/month
Gives you 100 sent messages. Additional sent messages are 15¢ each.

Unlimited
$13/month
Gives you unlimited sent messages. There are no roaming, airtime, or long distance charges for either senders or recipients
As mom2faith stated, if you want to call someone or if you receive a call it is .95/minute in the U.S. but includes long distance and airtime. What we did was switch to the Unlimited Talk North America Plan which, while in the U.S., gives you 300 (or more depending on the plan) minutes of long distance. There are no additional charges applied. This plan is $40/month but you can switch back to another plan after you return. We used this to call each other on our cells as well as call back home. I personally don't like texting (all thumbs :thumbsup2) so prefer calling anyway so this made sense for us. Last year we bought 2 U.S. prepaid phones but since then SaskTel has come out with this plan which is way easier to deal with.

Here is some info on this plan if you are interested:
The Unlimited Talk North America plans include:

  • Unlimited local and long distance calling with other SaskTel wireless customers (calls must be initiated from within Saskatchewan -- see Wireless Calling Scenarios).
  • Unlimited long distance evening and weekend minutes to anywhere in North America (calls must be initiated or received from within Saskatchewan -- see Wireless Calling Scenarios).
  • A set number of long distance minutes that can be used any time of day for calls placed anywhere in North America. (North America refers to Canada and the U.S. including Alaska and Hawaii — Mexico is not included)

With all Unlimited Talk North America plans, our regular cellular long distance rates never apply. Additional long distance charges only apply when placing calls to locations outside of North America (international cellular long distance rates apply in addition to Unlimited Talk North America rates).
If you are having problems getting info from the kiosk at the mall give SaskTel a call at 1-800-727-5835. The person I talked to was very knowledgeable on the long distance plan I was interested in.
