WOW, these Santa Ana winds that arrived last night here in Southern California are pretty intense. As many of you know my family is new to SoCal and we were told by many after arriving to watch for those Santa Ana winds!!! Despite the winds it is a beautiful bright sunny morning. Temps @ 8am, 65 degrees.

Any other DISer's in the SoCal area experiencing these winds?

Santa Ana Winds
From Wikipedia

The Santa Ana winds in Southern California sweep down wide across the deserts and across the Los Angeles Basin pushing dust and smoke from wildfires far out into the Pacific Ocean. The Santa Ana winds are strong, extremely dry offshore winds that characteristically sweep through in Southern California and northern Baja California in late fall into winter. They can range from hot to cold, depending on the prevailing temperatures in the source regions, the Great Basin and upper Mojave Desert. However, the winds are remembered most for the hot dry weather (often the hottest of the year) that they bring in the fall.

I'm from Northern California, but I have experienced them a few times.

I love  Santa Anna winds!! It is the only time we can actually see the sky with out smog!!!

It is the ONLY thing I like about living in SoCal! (Well besides Disneyland of course!!)

and now the problem with the Santa Ana winds shows it's head, with the fire :(

it is crazy windy right now, a few tree branches have fallen.

i live just north of los angeles in the hills and worry about fires. it rained so much at the beginning of the year. the hills turned the most gorgeous shade of green, then unfortunately dried up. the mustard plants on the hiking trails grew at least six feet and now they are just pale, dried out stalks.

i just hope no one flicks their cigarette butts out of their car driving on the freeway.

as someone mentioned the clear skies are nice and the air is filled with a warm electricity that i love.

You've got to be kidding. For many of us in SoCal, Santa Ana's are the most dreaded weather event of the year. Read up on the firestorms in 2003 and 2007 and you'll know why. Last year's Witch Creek fire missed my neighborhood by 3 miles, we know quite a few people who lost their homes. :guilty:

Here's a great website/page where you can monitor, in real time, all of the weather stations in SoCal (or anywhere in the US). This page includes fire information:

I am sorry for not mentioning the fire dangers that the winds do brings. I do not live in a fire area, so it isn't something that I think of when the wind starts. I have lived in SoCal my whole life so I do realize how bad the fires are and of course I am in no way saying I love the wind because it brings fire!:confused3 I am sorry if I offended anyone, I love the wind because it means fall is starting and the weather will be at least cooling a few degrees!! And being from the inland empire.....being able to see the sky is always nice!

No offense taken, sorry for the tone of my response. Like you, I've lived in SoCal all of my life and I love the Fall weather here. It used to be my favorite season until everything started burning down. :sad1: I don't know what's going on with this phenomena, there's been strong Santa Ana winds for decades without burning everything down. It's really a shame, last weekend was gorgeous, but I couldn't enjoy it because I knew that The Winds were coming. Oh well, looks like Spring is my new favorite season! :goodvibes

I live just south of you. Later in the week I plan to head up your way for a movie and Panera Bread.

The winds were so bad this morning my kids actually didn't wear shorts to school for the first time this year. The fire danger is awful. The hills around our neighborhood have gone up twice since we've lived here and it is scary. But I do appreciate that the winds = fall and cooler weather. It is HOT here in the summer and it is nice to actually have some relief.

Did any of you feel the earthquake last night? I am not a native so these things are still of note for me. I was watching TV and heard the house make some noise so I checked the USGS website to see if we had one. It was a 3.4 out in Cabazon.

I hate the Santa Ana winds. I live in Riverside and have terrible allergies. The winds kick up everything and I am miserble for days on end even with medication.

The other poster was just commenting how it gets rid of all the pollution at least for a day or so and when I lived in LA area it was a blessing for that reason....but that is putting the fires aside.

The winds here today have not been so bad but sure is dry. I hate when the air is so darn dry. Makes my skin feel as if it has lost all moisture in it and i am shriveling up.

Last fire and the fires a few years back I was on horse rescue and care ...and that is how i spend my fire weeks as they come. I go and rescue horses and bring them to a safe haven. sometimes we cant get them and we have to leave them. That is so hard but they just wont come...they are so afraid.

Than after the rescue I stay at that safe haven and help with all the other volunteers caring for them until there owners can come and take them home. This past summers fire both my children helped me they are 14 and 11. My niece did also.

I also worked for one day as a nurse at the Charger stadium. Very important to volunteer or give what you can.

so I am all ready for this the next time it happens...I am always on alert during these winds and await my call to come in to pick up a horse trailer and be on my way. Or where ever i am needed.

During last year's fire they boarded horses at an old golf driving range a block from where I work (In El Cajon, off of Weld Blvd). I thought it was a great way to use the open space.

That was where I was.....:thumbsup2

Also brought horses to the homedepot and parkways plaza but helped at the driving range.

The Santa Ana winds do clear the air and cause horrible fire conditions at the same time.

All we can do is help those in need and give to the local shelters at this time of year.

I've lived here all my life and this is how it always has been. People say "why do you live in fire country?" Well, 11 months out of the year, it is gorgeous!

this morning i posted about how beautiful and clear the skies were...what a jinx i am!

i left my house not too long after to see a blackened sky. turns out porter ranch, south of me is on fire, at the time 750 acres were charred, now its up to 5000 acres and only 5% contained with the winds kicking back up again.

i was up at my moms house earlier and there was a CBS news van down the street and a firetruck that said "anaheim fire dept" on the side of it. the fire was still on the other side of the mountain, so no worries as of now.

i hope the winds die down, i'll take smog over people losing their homes anyday of the week. :sad2:

YIKES, DISer's, you all have me a little freaked  about these Santa Ana winds. I am in NB and yesterday 100 acres of Bonita Canyon burned and it is right next to our complex....very scary.

We just arrived July 1st and that earthquake almost sent me right back to MA

BUT as you all have said the weather here in SoCal is A M A Z I N G!!! Having lived in New England my whole life....I am so excited for a December without snow, sleet, black freezing ice, heavy winter fog, temps that drop to - 10!! ::yes::

We are happy to be here and we will just have to deal the best we can with these winds. ::yes::

We have had winds back home like this in the winter and the power goes out and can be for days  no fires to speak of BUT at the same time no electricity. :headache:

Thankfully, there were not many deaths with these winds so far. :sad1:
