I need help with getting a good car rental deal. We got a pretty good deal on airfare to Sanford Airport instead of Orlando but cannot get a good car rental rate. We will be going to Disney World 10/10- 10/20. The rates I have been given range from $400 to $700. I did get a rate of $199 for a week from Alamo but after we add on 3 days and all their surcharges it comes to over $400. We are a family of 5 so we need a minvan or SUV. Any ideas?

Since Sanford is a smaller airport (serving mostly charter flights and Pam-Am), the rental car companies aren't as plentiful there. You might be able to arrange taxi or shuttle service to Orlando International to rent a car there.

If you are really budget conscious, you could take the Lynx bus from Sanford, but I don't think there's a direct route, so you'd be making bus transfers with luggage - that would be a hassle.

If I come across any rental companies advertising specials out of Sanford (I drive in that area almost every day) I will post here.

I seem to get a decent rate at Dollar using the 'FVG' code on a minivan. See http://www.travelcouponsonline.com/best.html for sample rates using different codes at the Orlando (MCO) airport locations of different rental companies.
When you get to the Dollar website, enter 'SFB' for pickup location. It is the airport code for Sanford. I come up with a rate of $329.96 + TX/fees additional for your dates, which is not a bad deal for a 10 day rental on a minivan. I bet you will not get a lower rate at MCO when you factor in transportation costs to get you there and back.

Do you absoultely NEED the car for the whole week? You can pick it up in Sanford airport and drop it off in Downtown Disney, pick it up again to drive back to the airport at the end of the week. It will save you a considerable amount of money.

I finally just rented from Alamo. A Blazer for $189 per week plus 3 extra days plus their surcharges for a total of $374. I just had to finalize something and with 3 young kids it just isn't worth the hassle of dealing with other alternatives. This way we will be able to go to Universal studios and other places and not worry about it once we get there. Anyway, I'm finally ready to go on Oct 10!
