Sandy, the aurora is risin' behind us

The federal holidays are the first "built in" snow days in our district. We had two days off for Sandy, and our schools will be in session those two days.

Hoping that Harrisburg will do something so we don't have to make up our days :sad1::sad1:

While I now teach in NJ, I taught in PA for a little over 20 years. If history is an indicator, I wouldn't count on it. What they might allow is a longer school day, but only if you can't make up the days before June 30th.

Last year we went through the same situation after Irene and October snow storm.

They 'proposed' cancelling the winter break in order to make up time. We had lost about a week each storm.

The teachers indicated that they had planned vacations and the school district caved, despite meetings, despite angry parents, despite letter to Board of Education. The school district claimed it would not have enough substitute teachers to cover all the teachers who would be out, they needed over 64 substitutes. So no cancelled winter break.

As much as I never wish to take my children out from school for a vacation, after that example was set by teachers and Board of Education, I would not cancel anything.

I agree..go ahead with your plans. This happens every year where I live. We get a bit of snow and the area is not equipped to handle it, so school is cancelled..last year 5 days total if I recall. They had 2 'snow' days built into the calendar, but neither of them was used as any make up days. Lots of drama about it all and then some kind of bull about well, if the governor calls it something or other they don't have to make it up. Please..and this state wonders why we are always at the bottom in education? They also rarely have a week that they have school all five days..so no, I wouldn't change the plans..I'd take the kids and go.
