I saw a bunch of holes on the side of our yard, right where the woods meets the lawn (or the burnt out area that should be a lawn) at first I thought they were ant hills but kept seeing wasps or something of that nature go in them.. Now there are many more-this is only one day later,.. I did some research on the internet and think they may be cicadia killer or sand wasps.. anyone have any knowledge of them and how or if I need to get rid of them? They are near DS's basketball hoop .. poor kid,, I don't let him in the backyard because of the fox den,, the side yard now because of this..

I have never heard of them, but hopefully someone here can help you. Maybe normal wasp spray that sprays out in foam stream could help.

I think I would be investing in an exterminator. It is tough getting rid of insects in your yard.

Anyone?? I guess I will try the foam stuff and if not call the exterminator.. They are not close to the house but still they are near the basketball hoop.

AnnMorin,
Please be careful !!! Yellow jackets will build shallow nests under dirt and debris and so will wasps. They will swarm if
they are disturbed or feel threatened. A neighbor was nearly killed when he drove his lawnmower over such a 'hive' that he didn't know was there. Foam and other such remedies can be dangerous because you may kill some by contact but others who are out of the hive or aren't reached by the poison can react. Some of these hives have tens of thousands of bees. Don't mean to sound overly-dramatic but this may be a job for an exterminator.

Yikes! I am not sure what to do... they have not seemed agressive at all,. I was staring at the holes for quite some time trying to figure out if it was from ants or not and that is when I saw one climb in.. didn't pay me any mind at all.

I am scared of any type of wasp or bee nest since I am allergic. I would definitely call an exterminator.

AnnMorin,
They aren't aggressive unless they feel threatened. When they built a 'hive' under the trim between my house and deck, the exterminator even warned us from standing too close to their 'flight path' in and out because they can sense the carbon dioxide of your breath.

The weird part was there are about I don't know six holes or so (this is in the dirt where our lawn meets the woods- the woods abuts the golf course which I heard it is common for them to nest near) anyhow I thought for sure they were ant hills so I was examining them for quite a bit.. our dog dtarting playing with something and I noticed it was a wasp or that nature,, I saw a few more and was able to just step on them with my shoe. My research said that if they are sand wasps the males have no stinger and are non aggressive so that would make sence. BUT it said they come out in late summer- so I then though maybe they are yellow jackets? It is raining right now and all the holes are gone (DH thinks I am imagining this) I will have to look again tomorrow.

i vote for an exterminator. please be careful when you go look again.
