Has anyone here done a sand ceremony instead of a traditional unity candle? I've never seen it done before but really like the idea. Any thoughts?

it has been done several times at ceremonies at my church. It is quite beautiful. And if you're getting married at an outside venue at WDW, this might be a better option.

Blessings,
Winnie

You have 3 glass cylinders/vases. 1 larger & 2 matched sized smaller ones. Fill 2 smaller ones with sand. It's really pretty if you use 2 different colors. 1 color in one, 2nd color in other. Then when it is time during ceremony, B&G pour sand cylinders at the same time into the larger cylinder. It layers so pretty if 2 colors are used.

It signifies the 2 becoming one, just as the unity candle ceremony does. It is quite pretty.

Blessings,
Winnie

WE had a sand ceremony at our beach wedding. It was everyones favorite part. We used pearlized nautilus shells to hold our sand, and now its on our mantle. :)
Here is the wording:
Sand Ceremony (Optional)
_______ and _______, you have just sealed your relationship by the giving and receiving of rings and the exchange of a kiss, and this covenant is a relationship pledge between two people who agree that they will commit themselves to one another throughout their lives. The most beautiful example of this partnership is the marriage relationship. You have committed here today to share the rest of your lives with each other. Today, this relationship is symbolized through the pouring of these two individual containers of sand one, representing you, _______ and all that you were, all that you are, and all that you will ever be, and the other representing you, _______, and all that you were and all that you are, and all that you will ever be. As these two containers of sand are poured into the third container, the individual containers of sand will no longer exist, but will be joined together as one. Just as these grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your marriage be.

I know this is probably a stupid question, but has anyone ever heard of this being done in a vow renewal? I've always thought this was really pretty, especially using the two color sands, but didn't know since we were already married/"joined" if this was heard of.

Just be creative and change the words up some. Remember it's your Vow Renewal. Put in the parts that would be special to you as a couple.

that is SO beautiful and I love that you can keep it forever!!

so if I decided to do this sand ceremony... I'd have to buy all the stuff and bring it with me to disney right? I mean.. it sounds so lovely really and I like the idea of the different colored sand.. I just want this to be as easy as possible. I'm already worried I'm going to forget something when we leave!

We are buying our Sand Ceremony kit from Disney floral ($50.00)

is there a website I can go to or a picture I can see? and Pottersmom, do you happen to have a pic of your sand jar thing? haha. don't know what to call it, sorry! :cutie:

I dont have a picture of it, but Rosie at Disney floral described it to me as a glass about the size of a 3 inch pillar candle. They have several different colors of sand available and we are using the blue and white. She did say you are able to bring your own container if you want. I am not as when I get it home I am putting it in our Mickey Wall Sconce from Disney Shopping.

We are also going to have rose petals around the sand ceremony instead of a floral arrangement.

The only thing I'm worried about now is from the pictures I've seen, if you're having an outdoor ceremony, where do they perform this at? For instance, we're doing our ceremony at Sunset Pointe at the Poly and I don't see an altar or table to perform this. :confused3

ditto. I"m getting married at seabreeze point. guess it's time to call juliana my wedding coordinator again!

another question: once the sand is inside the bigger vase or jar... what happens then? do you seal it somehow?

I remember being a kid and making sand paintings in jars and they would seal them up with wax when we were done.

I mean, how can you travel with this jar of sand after the ceremony and be ok? how are you supposed to fly on a plane or anything with it after without sand getting everywhere? *confused* :confused3

My parents are driving to the wedding so I was just going to send it home with them. I did see some of the sand ceremony kits on ebay had a lid/cork. I had also thought of using a empty wine bottle and recorking it.

We are doing a sand ceremony at SBP, but we are a blended family so we actually have 6 colors of sand. It's still $50 and I'm pretty sure that they set up a table for that. We are bringing our own container since the ones she has don't have lids.
I found a wine decanter that is blown glass, with a nice glass stopper. I want to get it etched with our names and the date before we go. I had a hard time choosing 6 colors that matched, out of what colors are available though.

OOOhhh....I like the idea of the decanter I am curious what it looks like that you are able to have all that engraved on it. Please share ! I think for the outdoor ceremonies, they recommend sand over candles. Though Rosie did send me a picture of the unity candles in hurricane lamps to help block the wind. Wouldn't it be a bad sign if you lit the unity candle and a wind blew it out !!:rolleyes1

We ordered this nesting set (the one on the right.) http://www.kensingtonclassics.com/product/8246

We are getting married in the WP, but it's going to be noon and in the summer, so felt it will give us the more casual feel we're looking for. DFTW is going to provide the sand for us. Since we live in SC near the beach we bought our own vases so we can keep them and display them like shown on the website with flowers in the two side vases :)
