We are sailing the Southern Caribbean itinerary from San Juan next year. Any experience with San Juan hotels for pre-cruise stays?

I've stayed at the Courtyard by Marriot Isla Verde Beach Resort after my last Transatlantic Cruise in 2014. The hotel is right on the beach and I enjoyed it very much for the four days I stayed after my cruise. If I ever have to go back to San Juan for a cruise or just for a visit I want to stay at Hotel El Convento which is right in the heart of Old San Juan. I believe the location for El Convento has a lot more to offer than the Marriot however if you just want to hang out at the beach than I would suggest the Marriot.

Important thing to remember is that it's a different pier than the one used for docking for a day visit. So you decide if you stay near the port you'll use or in the heart of old San Juan.

We just went to Puerto Rico in April (not a cruise trip). We stayed at the Marriott San Juan Stellaris Resort and Casino. Super family friendly if you have kids. We LOVED it!! It was about 10 minutes to Old San Juan which is where the cruise port is, and a $15 taxi ride (hotel calls taxis)

We have a cruise booked out of San Juan and I have a friend that recently traveled there. He recommended the Double Tree. I did some Trip Advisor research and it has stellar reviews for a really decent rate. We're paying $170/night which comes with breakfast for up to 2 adults/2 children. We got a room with a queen bed and pull down murphy bed which will be perfect for our DD.

I can recommend the Double Tree. We stayed there 3 nights in January before our Southern on the Wonder. I had several places reserved but kept coming back to it because of the value. We felt for the price/amenities/location it was a good bargain. It was across the street from a great 24 hour grocery (we had two meals there and picked up miscellaneous supplies for the cruise). They took us on the hotel golf cart when we wanted to go to the beach. It was also a short/safe walk to the beach and several good restaurants. Taxis were easy and plentiful. Our rate didn't include breakfast but we had the Queen with the Murphy bed. I will say it is kind of a tight room (it was my husband and I and our two boys, ages 7 and 8). It made our 9C stateroom feel spacious, which was probably a good thing. The pool area is nice. Service was okay. Nothing spectacular but nothing terrible, either. We loved to sit out at night and listen to the coqui frogs. If you go into it realizing how much you are saving I think you will be happy. Just know you aren't beachfront and aren't able to walk to Old San Juan.

We've stayed at El Convento before for a wedding, and we loved it. Would highly recommend it for a stay in Old San Juan.
