DS and I will be in San Francisco for 3 days and a few hours will be taken up by meetings (hence trip :cool1:).

We are staying in Union Square and he must do Academy of Sciences, Alacatraz, and The Bridge. I'd love to hit Muir Woods!

Is the City Pass and renting a car for 1 day our best option?

Thanks!

City Pass is worth it if you really plan to go to the attractions that it covers, you can get it with a $9 discount at costco.com
Enjoy, SF is beautiful!

There are only two ways to get to Muir Woods...one of the tour busses (I've never done these, but sure have seen plenty of them) or driving yourself. It's not far from the City (maybe 30-35 minutes from the GGB), but the roads are VERY curvy and mountainous. It never bothered me much, but I've had plenty of guests tell me that they are petrified to ride the roads and would never have wanted to be the driver. So, if curvy, windy roads bother you, I'd strongly suggest you leaving the driving to the tour bus operators. Otherwise, you'll be fine driving. It's beautiful, and well worth the trip IMO.

We bought a city pass for a trip and enjoyed using it, but we were there at the first of the month and a lot of the museums were having free first of the month days. We would have been better off not getting it, money wise. We got a lot of use however riding the cable cars!

We are going in March and have looked into the citypass and the go card. The Go Card seems like a MUCH better value for money for SF

( and I have used citypasses in several citys in the past, so I know what they are all about first hand)

I would think being in a bus would be worse.

We drove to Muir Woods and the drive is scary due to the roads, but at least you are in control of the car.

We went by bus tour when we drove the Amalfi coast in Italy and trust me, being high up in a bus with someone else driving was far worse. :scared1:

I've ridden up to Muir Woods several times and don't recall the roads being bad at all. And I get terrible motion sickness, so I'd probably remember. The road to the top of Mt Tamalpi (sp?) almost got to me, but the view is incredible.
