DH and I will be making our first trip to DL in just 9 short weeks and we included tickets to the zoo as part of our package. Can anyone tell me approximately how far we are from the zoo? Also, how is the driving to and from it? We are from upstate NY and have heard terrible things about the driving in CA. Thanks! :)

It is hours away. Not terrible, it just depends on traffic.
When DH and I were driving around So CA, we only had one minor traffic problem experience. The reason we lucked out is because of the commuter lane.
If it had not been for that god send of a lane, we would easily have spent double the time just sitting in traffic.
You will really enjoy the zoo. It's just as much of a botanical graden as it is a zoo. I think that is what makes it so unique. But if they took away their African and Asian animals, they really wouldn't have many remaining. They are overly heavy on those animals.
We found it was best after entering to head to the left to the Skyfari. Ride that to the other side. Hardly anyone will be that side then. Be sure to watch the polar bears first.
Things might have changed, but when we were there just over a year ago, they were only letting the young (playful) male polar bears out in the morning.
And make sure you stop by the zoo's Wildlife Park in Escondito. Very, very nice. And if you watch The Keepers on Animal Planet, you will see many familiar sites

The drive will take 1 1/2 hours if there is no or little traffic. The zoo is beautiful. Some things not to miss - Tiger River, Hippo Beach, Polar Bear Plunge, The Koalas, and Gorilla Tropics. Pay extra to take the Kangaroo Bus Tour. You can get off the tour bus at many locations throughout the zoo and then JUMP back on when you are finished visiting an area. Wear comfortable shoes and be prepared for a lot of walking if you want to see all that the zoo has to offer. :D
