Any advice from those who have sailed in/out of the terminal? We have a hotel about a 1/3 mile from the terminal, can we walk or should we plan to hire a taxi/uber?

Thanks,
Kate

Luggage is not an issue and we are big time hikers so no issue with the distance. My concern is lack of sidewalks/pedestrian congestion :confused3. Since I have not been to the area, I have no idea of what we might encounter. Is this a walkable area? We were in New Orleans once, fairly close to the train station and due to the neighborhood, still had to grab a cab.

Never cruised out of San Diego but I stayed at the Manchester Hyatt in January and you will not have any issues walking around downtown San Diego and the harbor. It is a well laid out area with large sidewalks.

Here's a photo of the immediate area in front of the terminal (notice there's a crosswalk, with a dedicated light, just to the right of the ship):

And from the other side of the street, looking toward the Wonder:

Probably won't be a problem why don't you do a trial run without luggage to see how the roads are traffic etc. once you get settled in to your hotel

I'd walk it. When we disembarked in San Diego, it took us a good 45 minutes to get a taxi. With the San Diego airport being so close everyone takes cabs there so the line is long.

Where are you staying? I need a recommendation.

I remember waiting in that loooonnnngggg taxi line. It was HOT that morning, too! October 1st and we were not expecting it to be *that* hot in San Diego!

I've lived in SoCal my whole life...and San Diego for the past 14 years...I would say October is our hottest month of the year. Its just awful. Right when you start thinking about pumpkins and Fall and all that fun stuff, a week of 100+ temps arrives and you think, OMG, will this ever end.

@johnson5 If you want to get "out" sooner, walk across the street to somewhere like Ruths Chris and order an Uber from there. Or from the USS Midway Museum.

I guess it depends on how much luggage you have. I usually just pack a carry-on rolling suitcase so I have walked from the SD cruise terminal to the train station or vice versa which was a short and easy walk. If you are going to use transportation I would suggest either uber or lyft.

We drove down from Disneyland the morning of our cruise out of San Diego so can't recommend any hotels but we dropped off a car at Thrifty and took a taxi to the port. The area around the terminal looked very easy to walk. Nice sidewalks and nice views!!

Very easy to walk around the entire area. We parked a mile away and chose to walk last time, rather than stand around and wait for an overcrowded shuttle.

The Wyndham is directly across the street from the terminal.
The Embassy Suites and the Hyatt Manchester are also both short walks.
Other hotels would depend how far you wanted to walk. I personally would have an expanded radius of where I'd walk to, but other's maybe not.

We are staying at the Hampton Inn, Downtown-San Diego. We have never stayed at this particular one so I hope it is a good choice.

Kate

We stayed at the same Hampton Inn. We walked to and from the ship with our luggage with no problem. It didn't take long and the sidewalks were completely fine.

We really liked this hotel. Great service and among the best Hampton Inns we've seen. It's maybe an extra block away compared to the closest hotel, but it's still close enough to see the ship from the front of the hotel. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again.

We just used Lyft to get a car when we disembarked last year.... we didn't wait more than 10 minutes for the car to arrive.
