I just booked flights for January. Does any one have suggestions for a nice place to stay, reasonably priced, with easy access to destinations. I'm not particularly interested in staying in the Riverwalk area. Thanks for your help.

What destinations do you want, if you are not interested in the Riverwalk area?

I'm lookign for something with easy access to freeways, the zoo, shopping. I'm not at all familiar with San Antonio.

I dont know what kind of shopping you are looking for. Just the same old stores at the mall?

Downtown - RW area, has some tourist shopping areas, and the malls with the larger chain stores are out north. If you are seeing the Alamo, Zoo, El Marcado, then RW area is best. If you are seeing Fiesta Texas and Seaworld, northside is best.

RW area, try the Holiday Inn RW or the Crowne Plaza, both are fairly reasonable. For the Northside, there are a number of hotels around the airport, a handful around Fiesta Texas and some more out by Seaworld.

There is a website that has discounts and information for San Antonio.

Google San Antonio SAVE and you will find it.

There are two Marriott highrises attached to the downtown Rivercenter Mall. There is a branch of the river that extends to Rivercenter but it is not actually on the riverwalk itself. The Omni La Mansion del Rio is nice and quiet but is by the riverwalk.

I looove Rivercenter Marriott!

I really think the Riverwalk is your best bet. It is very easily accessed by the freeway (281(?) or McAllister Freeway) That takes you to 10 really easily. There are other areas with lots of hotels but they are just the airport or the medical center area. The RW is most convenient and the nicest for sure.

I love The Hotel Contessa on the RW. There are Marriotts, Hiltons etc down there as well. A couple of Omni properties.

San Antonio is HUGE. So, I'd stay close to where you are sight-seeing. If you don't mind driving, there are lots of affordable places to the NW of San Antonio and around Sea World and the amusement park. However, this area may be 25-45 minutes drive from DT San Antonio.

Thanks for your replies. We're Canadians coming down to escape the cold of winter for a week. DD wants to look for her grad dress while we are there. I think I'll look in the NW area of San Antonio. We are renting a vehicle and don't mind driving. Can't wait for January!!!

Look up LuLu's Bakery for a small treat :rotfl:

The Westin La Canterra is next to the mall there. The amusement park is out that way as well. But truly, unless you are downtown at the Riverwalk, the place is just a maze of highways and strip malls.

If this is a vacation, you really want to be downtown along the river.

Hard to find but great to eat: http://www.chrismadrids.com/main.php?language=english The best burgers in SA.

My favorite restaurant is Boudros. The BEST guacamole made tableside.

Another one is Liberty tavern on Josephine Street and Josephine Street. The latter has a tree growing thru it. Liberty Tavern might have been moving though. If it loses the old building it wouldn't be the same place.

For shopping also try the Quarry Market. Built in the old limestone quarry. Lots of great stores and a lot of restaurants. About 5 minutes south of the airport or north of downtown, along 281 (I hope I have the number right.)

Northwest side is where we stay we when we visit (because my family live all around the northwest side). Good access to IH-10 and 410 to downtown and other attractions. We stay at the Drury Inn near La Canterra, it's at I-10 and Loop 1604. We've also stayed at other Drury Inns in SA, we like their conveniences and extras. We just got back a couple of weekends ago and stayed at the Drury on I-10 and Wurzbach, but it is a bit more hectic in that area (my mother's nursing home is within a couple of miles there and we wanted to be close-by).

I love the Menger (request the newer side) and LOVE LOVE LOVE La Mansion del Rio (my favorite hotel). The Hyatt Riverwalk is nice - I know you said you weren't really interested in staying at the Riverwalk but I think you'll enjoy it once you are there. It's easy to get to places, there is a mall there, the Alamo is across the street, etc. My husband is also a fan of the Emily Morgan Hotel but to me, it's just ok. Hope you have a great time - I love San Antonio!

Hi,

May I ask why not the riverwalk area?

Have you been to San Antonio before maybe?

I say this because most freeways is just highways and strip malls.

The riverwalk is very close to the zoo, sunken gardens and even a huge shopping (cannot think of the name though) but has a whole foods, etc.

The riverwalk also has many hotels at great prices and of course Market square is there too.

Unless you are visiting relatives or just want to see nature, I truly recommend the riverwalk area. With a car, you can get everywhere real fast from there.

parking can be found on the cheap if you look around or just park in the garages thru out downtown san antonio.
