San Angel Inn

I also like the San Angel mostly for the atmosphere. It's cool and dark (hard to read the menu I thought), great margaritas, fantastic visuals, and a nice shop on your way in/out. I guess I just like the theming and the food has been good (not great) as well. I always thought it was a bit expensive for what you get but with the dining plan...

I'm going to check out the line for the ride and see if it's something a 7 and 8 can do a few times while we have a drink. Anyone know if you can see a good portion of the waitline? I wouldn't want them out of my sight for too long :flower:

We make San Angel a stop on our itinerary every year. We have found the service to be hit or miss. Sometimes good, sometimes not so good. Because of other commitments, we normally have to go to WDW in the middle of summer, so we always enjoy getting out of the sun to a cool, dark place. The quality of the food has been fairly consistent for us -- good, but not extraordinary. Then again we eat a lot of Mexican food so we are pretty picky.

I think it is worth a try.

I love the atmosphere here, but not some of the food. We just forget about the entrees (pretty over priced and not very good, IMO) and get appetizers. The Queso Fundido is amazing - it's a chesse mixture with tasty sausage and chiles (diced small) that comes baked (like a small caserole) and you wrap chunks of it in warm mini-tortillas. On the menu, it's listed "for two", and it does make two nice appetizer portions (two tortilla's each).

To split between two people for a nice meal, we usually get the Queso, an order of Nachos (it's a small order - not a big pile like you'd get at other places), and the Traditional Sope, which is a a soft corn tortilla shell with refried beans, sauces, and delicious cheese.

Then, sometimes, when we feel bad, we'll just double up on the Queso and munch on the chips and salsa they bring you when you are seated.

N.E.D.

PS - CAUTION! That salsa is HOT...and they can be a little slow in getting drinks out. Just be warned, LOL.

The food at San Angel has always been good in our experience (not great, good) but the margaritas are always a dissapointment (very light on the tequila in both the frozen and top shelf). We shifted to Dos Equis beer instead. The fiesta margarita at the kiosk outside is much better!

Just to add my two cents... DW and I ate there for lunch on our last trip, and we thought it was pretty good. The service was fine, competent, but not overly effusive (which for us, most times, is a positive).

My only complaint was really nothing more than an annoyance, but it was pretty annoying: the chips were nothing but Tostitos. That's it. I mean, I live in Middletown, Ohio (or, as I call it, Middletucky), and even at the several small, Latino-run Mexican restaurants we have here, they have fresh-made tortilla chips, not ones from a bag. IMO, it's not all that labor-intensive to cut up some corn tortillas and drop 'em in a fryer.

Anyway.

I've always wanted to try San Angel so I'm making an ADR for this trip but I was wondering - what is "Tex-Mex" food like and how is that different from Mexican?

DH loves hot and spicy foods - jalapenos, not hot enough for him. We've planted habaneros for the last couple years, loves 'em! I'm not one for that hot of food though.

Around here we have lots of Red Lobsters, AppleBee's, TGIF's, Bob Evans ... so I'm looking foward to trying out some different foods on this trip.
:wave2:

The best mole I have ever had. Caveat: I live in Louisville, Kentucky and my mole opportunities are few and far between. But to me--the mole is just outstanding--dark, smoky, chocolately (but no sweetness). Bathes the perfectly adequate chicken (but, you know, I would probably eat good mole off of cardboard and not complain). Service has varied considerably from trip to trip, from outstanding (I expressed disappointment that mole wasn't on the lunch menu, the waiter had the chef whip me up a plate anyway) to rather poor (where are those drinks, anyway?).

The atmosphere is great but remember to bring a flashlight cause it so darn dark!

The food was so-so. DH liked his Plato Nacional but my Pollo A Las Rajas was unevenly cooked, dry and overcooked on one side and OK on the other side. The drinks were kinda weird tasting, even DH said his coke didn't taste like coke.

I love San Angel Inn for the ambiance, the cool shade in the middle of the day (we only go at lunch), and the margaritas. I will say the food was not spicy enough for me (I live in Texas, so I'm used to really spicy.) And it's good, but not great... Actually, what we've done the last couple of times, is to go mid-afternoon, get drinks and split an appetizer.

The Nachos de Pollo are FANTASTIC! We have eaten there 4 or 5 times and the Nachos were the best. The portion was huge. I could not finish it. Our server was great.

DW and I consider ourselves Mexican food aficionados. We loved the San Angel Inn. The food was great but expensive. If you like margaritas, don't pass on one here.

I can honestly say that we have never had a bad experience here (food or service). The atmosphere is great, and I enjoy the margaritas. DS (9) is very picky and he likes this spot. Give it a try... princess: pirate: :earboy2:
