San Angel Inn?

I might have to re-think this. I assumed people didn't like it because it was a Chevy's or Chili's type of place. So it is fairly authentic??

You won't get confused and think you're actually in Mexico... but the style of cooking there is more of an authentic Mexican style than Tex-Mex.

Bottom line? The food is good, IMO.

We went last week, and absolutely loved it. However, we love authentic Mexican food. I had ceviche and the filete montueno, and DH had the sope and combinacion cozumel. Both of us thoroughly enjoyed our food. However, unlike others, we were not impressed with the salsa (or the chips for that matter). I guess we go to too many places where they make their own chips, and these tasted packaged, and the salsa tasted straight out of a jar. Not that it was bad, but it just didn't compare with the rest of the meal. The margaritas were also outstanding. If you can get an early ADR, you are more likely to get a table by the river, which is very nice.

The San Angel Inn serves good traditional Mexican food. If you are looking for Tex/Mex you may be disappointed. I heard one complaint that the mole was spicy, as was the stuffed poblano. Unfortunately for that person, mole is spicy, even though it has a chocolate base. And poblano is a chili, so yes, it is spicy also. So check the menu and find something to your liking and enjoy. Just remember, mole, poblano and chipotle are spicy.

This is one of our favorite restaurants at WDW! The atmosphere is amazing, and the food is alright. If I don't want meat, I get the Camerones Con Fideos. It comes with shrimp. I'm sure you could request to not have shrimp on it if you don't like seafood either.

My DH likes the Plato Mexicano. He's gotten that a couple of times. Oh, margaritas are a for sure thing. I've had the Ceviche before as an appetizer, and it was one of the alright dishes.

Thanks for the opinions! We love trying new things so I'm sure it will be OK. We need to try a new Disney restaurant anyway. Only 13 days away!!!!!

If you are a big fan of Mexcian food, then you will like San Angel. We are huge huge fans of mexican food, and really enjoy the food there. Its one of the few places we have eaten 3 times already because we like to try new places when we go. I don't understand what people are looking for when they say the food was not good. But ..... if everyone liked the same places we would never get an ADR anywhere

I'm eating there next week and in a couple of dishes the list "chayote". What is that and what does it taste like? I'm trying to decide whether to order it or not.

Simple answer to that question. They serve AUTHENTIC Mexican food, not American versions sort of tex mex stuff.

Since most of the clientle are not used to REAL Mexican food, no one likes it.
It is not what they are expecting.

I have never understood myself why they could not have even ONE non Mexican meal, say a plain steak or something at this one place but they never have.

San Angel used to be our favorite restaurant in Epcot. Our last visit was disappointing, however. The chips and salsa are now prepackaged and, at the time, you could purchase the same chips and salsa right in front of the restaurant. I don't remember exactly, but I believe they were Tostitos.

My family and I love authentic Mexican as well, but salsa from a jar and chips from a bag are not what I expect from San Angel. We don't plan on going back for a while, if at all.

I understand that the Tostitos can make the authentic thing start off badly! However, that is just one part of the meal. The entrees, particularly the mole, and beef and chicken entrees make up for the chips. I think the salsa is very good and I am not sure that is out of a jar. Hey my favorite local place here in Denver, owned by a multi generational family from Mexico serve tostitos. With a very spicy, homemade salsa. Frankly I think chips are an American thing, and if authentic Mexican restaurants here in the US or Mexico serve them, its to please the Americans!

San Angel was always a "must-do" for us for a very long time, however our last visit was horrible. The service was pathetic and nothing from appetizer to dessert was even what we would consider "good". DS(16) normaly eats anything resembling food and left almost all of his food. The atmosphere, however, is excellent.
