San Angel Inn?

We will be eating at San Angel Inn for the first time this Sept. I'm a little nervous due to the mixed reviews I've read here. Has anyone tried it lately? What are some good entree choices? We replaced Teppanyaki with this restaurant and we're hoping not to be let down!

The San Angel Inn is great for the atmosphere!! But the food is just ok!! We usually go there for lunch for that reason and the only reason we return is for the atmosphere and margaritas.. we usually would play it safe with some version of quesadillas or fajitas when we ordered! and plus if you think about it after one margarita and eating a million chips and salsa you are somewhat full anyway!!! When you arrive for your reservations at the san angel inn ask the host or hostess to sit you so you will have a great view of the water! The atmosphere will make up for (IMO) any misses in the food!!!

If you are still worried about your decision why dont you try one of the restaurants on the boardwalk! I always love spoodles and the flying fish..its just a quick walk from epcot!

My advice is that if the menu choices are fine with you, don't worry about it. We've avoided eating here because we don't like the true Mexican dishes that the San Angel Inn has to offer. However, my son and daughter-in-law can't wait for their first meal together there. I wouldn't tell them not to go just because *I* don't like the menu.

They are pretty flexible with their menu, too. We were just there for lunch a couple of weeks ago and I noticed that one platter on the menu had a bunch of stuff, including a chicken enchilada. I asked if I could just have two cheese enchiladas and they gave me that. Just ask and I'm sure they can accomidate you the best that they can.

Thanks for the replies. I'm pretty open about new tastes and so are two of my kids. I'm not sure my parents will like it, but they weren't too excited about Biergarten - I'm hoping they'll like this one better .

I liked it when we ate there in December. The dish I ordered is no longer on the menu, but the food was pretty good. Unless you are on the dining plan, the desserts are pretty forgetable, save the calories for something really delicious in Norway or France!

Service was so so, it took a while to get refills and our check at the end of the night. But it was also SUPER crowded and it didn't look like they had enough waiters, so I can forgive them a bit

We ate dinner there several years ago and really enjoyed it. It's not going to be typical Americanized Mexican. The relaxing atmosphere, can't be beat. We got to sit right next to the water and see the boat ride and the volcano. It's very pretty and relaxing.

DH and I ate there last Nov. and it was great!! We were seated right by the water and the volcano. The atmosphere was festive and at the same time romantic b/c of the lighting in the restaurant. The food was great we had the soup they offer for the appetizer and then we had for the entree the plate that brought a little bit of everything and again it was delicious. The food though is mexican authentic food its not ur taco bell americanized mexican food. We definitely enjoyed this restaurant and would return anytime. Hope you guys enjoy this meal as much as we did.

The San Angel Inn serves Mexican food. Most people in the United States seem to think that Tex-Mex food is Mexican food. It's not. Even worse, some people seem to think that Taco Bell and other similar fast food establishments serve Mexican food. They don't! What they serve is a really poor excuse for Tex-Mex.

True Mexican food and good Tex-Mex are different, and neither bears much resemblance to any kind of fast food.

If you go to San Angel Inn expecting fairly authentic Mexican dishes, rather than Tex-Mex, I think you'll like it.

I agree. The best mexican food I have had was in restaurants, where where they cook the food they grew up on. San Angel, is not as great as these types of places, but it's pretty close.

I'm feeling very encouraged . Our honeymoon (20 years ago ) was in Cancun. I'm not sure how "authentic" the food was in the touristy restaurants we went to, but there may be some similarities! Looking at the menu on Allears, we found several options that looked good - even the kids menu had something other than chicken tenders . I think we'll be OK. Thanks again for the responses.

I love the atmosphere in San Angel Inn -BUT I didn't care for the food and I love authentic mexican food as well as tex-mex. I did like the margaritas and salsa though. You should give it a try, everyone's tastes are different.

skater - We've have many enjoyable meals at San Angel Inn, I hope you do too! One word of advice though (and perhaps others will agree?).... flashlight!

The restaurant is quite dark, with just candlelight at the tables, making the menu difficult to read, unless they've upped the lighting since I've been there last.

If you happen to carry one of those mini-flashlights in your purse, it might come in handy. Or just look through the menu posted outside the restaurant and get an idea of what you'd like to order before your host/hostess seats you.

But, the lighting does give the illusion you're having a romantic late evening dinner, even when you've just come in for lunch on a sunny day!

I've read several posts about how great the salsa is. Is it served warm? On a recent trip to Mexico, every restaurant we visited served warm salsa with a chicken broth base. We have several local "authentic" Mexican restaurants that serve warm salsa, also.

I much prefer the tomato based cold salsa, though...

I would like to know about this restaurant too. We booked it for the Candlelight Package - it was our first choice because it looked so beautiful when we saw it during the Gran Fiesta ride. It was also the only one available for Christmas Eve!
But I never bothered to look at the menu.

What would you order if you didn't like meat much and definitely don't care for a lot of sauce ?

I have always enjoyed our San Angel Inn experiences. As other posters have said, the atmosphere is wonderful. The food is good as well - try the mole poblano (my fav) or the pollo a las rajas. And don't forget a margarita! The salsa is very good - tastes fresh. It is served cold.

Since you said that you are adventurous, I say go for it. We loved it when we were there in May and the atmosphere was second for us only to the Coral Reef. I say go for it I tried next to everything on the menu by shing with the other 5 people at the table and ordering a sampler platter...loved it all.

I might have to re-think this. I assumed people didn't like it because it was a Chevy's or Chili's type of place. So it is fairly authentic??
