We just walked into Mexico for the first time this past week even though we've done Disney for a while. We always were hustling to get to China for the acrobats or Japan for Miyuki or France for Boulangerie-Patisserie.

However, this past trip we ducked into Mexico to get into the a/c and were pleasantly surprised. San Angel Inn was gorgeous, ambience looked beautiful.
The guidebooks always seem to warn about the quality of food here and I have read some iffy reviews on the disboards in the past.

What is the quality of food like here? A lot of people say it's an overpriced restaurant that sells tosito chips and cheese melted on them via microwave. Is this true? We have lots of Mexican restaurants around here, is it worth it to dine at San Angel?

Thanks!

Ok we ate here once and then another time just got to baskets of nachos and drinks and both times we really enjoyed it! Its a beautiful restaurant but beware of getting seated where you just see a wall, lol. Our last time all we could see was a pink wall. Anyway the food is not like nothing like taco bell its more authentic and I happen to think thats why it sometimes gets bad reviews, some ppl are not use to it..

San Angel is the only MUST GO TO on our list every trip! We love it, the food is very good and well you saw for yourself, the atmosphere can't be beat. Service can be a little slow, but we don't complain, because overall it's an awesome dining experience!! :thumbsup2

The San Angel Inn is our favorite restaurant in all of Disney... (I mean, yah, we like California Grill and all... but we don't get there every trip...it's a special occassion place for us)...

I think the food there is VERY GOOD... I think it is also very AUTHENTIC Mexican...which is perhaps why SOME people don't like it...

Here in the Boston area we have a number of restaurants that serve authentic Mexican food... and I have to say, it is better than any meals I've eaten in the real country of Mexico!

If people are expecting TexMex or Taco Bell... they should not be eating at San Angel Inn... it is real Mexican food and I think it is DELICIOUS... And one Margarita will take all your cares away....though you may poop out after one before reaching the American Pavilion... LOL...

We are eating there next month and can't wait... The ambience is great..and so is the food... And I enjoy chatting with the CMs in Spanish. :) :Pinkbounc

DD and I love it there too - don't know what type of Mexican you would call it - I am not a conniseur of Mexican food (Taco Bell drive through has been my speed!) - but the margaritas are awesome, the chips and salsa are yummy, they have a tortilla soup that my DD just loves, and I enjoyed the nachos as well (that was my dinner the second visit). I had a combination platter.... Plato Mexicana (I think) that was yummy, and a WHOLE lot of food.

I love the atmosphere. Tables are a bit close to together - but I tend to get anxious when people are "in my space" - and I was relaxed while dining there! We went to Friday's in a row in May when DD was doing a school project on Mexico. We had wonderful service as well, not real fast, but that was okay - life moves way too fast in the real world anyway!!!! Our server the first evening was very sweet, and we actually had the same table the next Friday night (different server) but she remembered us!

We were there last week and we loved it!

I was worried after the reviews here. But I went into it knowing not to expect the Mexican food I am used too (we're in MI so I doubt we've ever had anything like authentic Mexican food). I looked at the menu online so I could see if anything on it sounded appealing.

I thought the atmosphere was great!
We all had the chips and salsa-average
All the adults had the soup (Sopa Azteca)-very good
I had the chicken dish (Pollo a las Rajas)-excellent
My mom and sister had the Combinacion Cozumel. My mom loved it. My sister not so much, but she is not a beef eater and has only eaten beef 1-2 in the last 15 years. Not sure why she ordered it that day. She did try my entree and loved it too, wished she had ordered that.
We didn't have drinks and were much too full for dessert so I can't comment on that.

I would definitely go back and recommend it!

Our last experience was not a pleasant one and we have never returned. I specifically made an in person trip to San Angel to make our PS reservation. When we arrived at our scheduled time, we were told to wait. We waited and waited watching others come in after us and get seated first. After 15 minutes of this, DH questioned mater D'. Seems like they forgot about us. We finallly got seated and service and food was mediocore. Maybe Disney has spoiled me with my expectance of high standards. As you can tell, I still get miffed by this and San Angel missed the mark.

I loved the San Angel inn! I believe they serve more typically southern Mexico food becuase they use cocoa, and if I remember right only certain Mexican cultures use this in their recipes. It is not the type of Mexican people are thinking of, but I thought it was great.

The portions are huge! For our family of three we got one entree and one appetizer, and we still couldn't finish it all. That saves a ton of money if you share entrees like this, and to tell the truth, we don't need huge meals.

We have always loved San Angel Inn. The food and service have always been wonderful.

You have to remember, take each review with a grain of salt, as people posting on these boards come from all different backgrounds and restaurant experiences. San Angel Inn is definately not tostitos with melted cheese, lol.
It is also not taco bell..and that is what many many people think is mexican food.

We stayed away from a particular epcot restaurant because of reviews from this board, finally we said the heck with it, we have to try it at least once. It has become one of our favorites in the world showcase. So, go and judge for yourself.

Have a great meal!

It's my second favorite World Showcase restaurant (just behind LeCellier) and I've dined here probably 15 times over the past 10 years - never had a bad experience with service or food. It's not your Tex-Mex (thankfully) style of cuisine - very spicy which we love. And the Margaritas are quite potent!

Love it!

I'm at WDW right now, taking a mid afternoon break at AS Sp from MGM. We walked into the Mexico Pavilion last night and that restaurant looked amazing. I really wish we had PS for it. It's a must for our next trip! I'd definitely say San Angel has the best ambience of any of the 1 credit TS restaurants I've ever seen at WDW. The boat ride in Mexico on the other hand, probably the worst attraction I've experienced all week.

Flame Tree BBQ has to be the biggest positive surprise of the trip, it's a QS and it's a lot better and just as filling as most TS!

We did not enjoy our meal there. The atmosphere was lovely, but the food tasted like nothing more than flour.

We enjoy both Tex Mex and authentic Mexican cuisine, and this was like neither that we've had. Of course, the authentic Mexican restaurants that we've been to have been from the Acapulco & Guerrero areas, which both have very flavorful foods. Perhaps elsewhere in Mexico, the residents love the taste of flour - we do not.

Cheers!

Fool me once, shame on you.
Fool me twice, shame on me.

Terrible semi authentic Mexican food.

Our least favorite place at EPCOT - actually went back a second time because I couldn't believe it was that mediocre.

It was.

Just my opinion; if you love it then great :)

I have been there a couple times and the ambience is amazing, and the food was good. The chips and salsa they bring you were bagged Tostitos-type stuff but the salsa tasted fresh, not jarred. I had the Mole Poblano once and the Carne Asada once and both were very good. The margaritas are yummy. I was seated once facing a wall and didn't enjoy that but the last time we were along the river and facing the volcano and it was soooo great! I hope to get back there again soon.
