Is their food too similar to try both in one day? We have been to La Hacienda, not SAI, and I am tempted to go to one for lunch, one for dinner this trip. I love Mexican (or Mexican-esque food) but wondering if my family will be unhappy with me (I know, only I can answer that one!)

The food is different, I don't think La Hacienda is open for lunch and the food is pretty heavy at San Angel so I'm not sure you would be able to do both (or at least we wouldn't) in one day. If I had to choose, I'd go with La Hacienda for supper and maybe do lunch at a QS somewhere.

We have eaten at both.

Some people dislike San Angel because the tables are close together. The food is hit or miss, but we love the theming and my kids always enjoy watching the boats go by. We always ride it after we eat.

If you really like Mexican food you should go on and do it. I don't pick either of these places anymore for the same reason we don't eat at 9 Dragons. Here in town I can find better Chinese and Mexican restaurants.

I would think it could be really fun to do both in one day, also squeezing in a visit La Cava de Tequila. You could write a cool dining report or story on Social media that way!

Yup, that's why we never do Nine Dragons or either Italian restaurant - we have tons of both at home. Good Mexican restaurants, sadly, we do not.

As you can see by the menus, the food is very different. To do both in one day, you would have to do San Angel at lunch and Hacienda at dinner (as it has not been open for lunch). Only you can decide if that is too much food. YOu might try and early lunch and a later dinner.
I'm not a fan of San Angel (the theme is beautiful, just had bad food on two different trips), so we pass, you may have a better experience.

We actually like San Angel better for lunch than dinner anyway because it is quieter so the close-together tables are not a problem because there is nobody right next to you, and it is much easier to get a table by the water. The food is so-so (I usually get an appetizer rather than an entrée because of that, and to eat lighter at lunch) but the ambiance is the BEST. We go there almost every trip.

As others have said, the menus are pretty different so I don't think it would be too much repetition.

Both Mexican but totally different taste. Try them both. We like Hacienda best.
