Samsung today announced a their entry to compete with the Micro 4/3 system. There is not much known at this point or even if it will continue to be compatible with the Pentax K mount. The style looks very much like a Pentax, so I suspect they are involved, but it is likely going to be a new unique mount that will be compatible with an adapter to the K mount.

Interesting. Still waiting to see Olympus' version (which I'm interested in).

I do think we'll be seeing more of these down the road.

Samsung sure has created a lofty goal for itself:

to become the global leader in the digital camera market by 2012.”
Wow. I'm not a business person but do they really think that's attainable?

I doubt they can become the market leader by then, but if there is a Canon killer in the midst, they are probably it. We do not hear much about them here in the USA, but worldwide, they have really surged in the past few years. They have more market share than Nikon already. The companies they are looking to leapfrog (Kodak, Sony, & Oly) are sort of riding in their given spots and are at risk of being overtaken by Samsung. If they can get a real winner in the DSLR market, they are going to be hard to stop. Hopefully they will continue their partnership with Pentax and keep using the K mount.

Pardon me for asking but where do you see that they have passed Nikon? Most of the data I've seen on DSLR sales in Japan show them fairly well down the list. For instance this link. And I just don't see how they could be beating Nikon worldwide yet well behind them in the US and Japan, the biggest markets.

I didn't say DSLR sales. They are in the #5 spot in overall sales. If I remember the order correctly, it is:

Canon
Sony
Kodak
Olympus
Samsung
Nikon

Overall sales are more important to a business than their DSLR sales. Nikon has actually grown in DSLR sales, but their p&s sales are not so great. Figures, I have a Nikon p&s...

Getting #1 is probably tough, but #3 is certainly possible.

The NX is interesting. It will be interesting to see what lens mount it ends up using. It would surely need an adapter (like the Olympus/Panasonic micro4/3rds ones) but I sure wouldn't mind if it uses a K mount. :) That they haven't said yet probably means a brand new mount or they haven't decided. The ideal setup would be a new mount with adapters to mount your choice of lens brands on there. For now, it looks like maybe they are using Sigma lenses? (There are photos elsewhere of the NX with a few different lenses on it, also in its three choices of color; black, silver, and red.)

Presumably it will be the K20D sensor in there, as that's a Samsung design and it's still plenty modern. I would guess IS will need to be in the lens, not the body.

The whole market is pretty much untapped at this point, so if Samsung can produce this camera at a decent price point and be physically about the same (or even smaller) than the Olympus/Panasonic models and have similar features, it certainly should be able to pretty easily outsell those.

I took their statement to mean they meant all of the digital market, not just the "hybrid" market.
