I'm looking at getting a tablet for my DD14 for Christmas. I know nothing about them :confused3 Have played with Ipad at verizon store and that is about it. The Samsung Galaxy Tablet 2 7.0 8gb is going to be one of the black friday deals for $179 :santa:. Can anyone tell me anything about this tablet? And the difference in this one and the ipad. I do understand that the galaxy runs on the android system.

Thanks!!!!

First question is... why are you looking to get it? Simply because it's on sale, or did DD specifically ask for it? (Or did she ask for something else, and you're hoping this is similar enough?)

You should definitely play with one in a store and get a feel for it. At a price point of $179, I'd be inclined to consider a Kindle Fire or Nexus 7 at $199 instead, both of which are well reviewed and generally with positive marks.

You mention it's a Black Friday deal, and on that, I'll just offer an opinion that there are almost no BF deals worth the hype. Literally, none. Especially in electronics, it's not uncommon for the special deal items to be lower spec, custom builds, and the like, that partially justify the lower price point. In an Apples to Apples comparison, the minimal savings (if any) don't justify the mad rush.

I am looking at getting my DD a Galaxy Tab 2 10" tablet for Christmas. So I have been doing a little research.

Here is a comparison of the Galaxy Tab 7" with the iPad Mini.

Some points in favor of the Galaxy:
Higher pixel density
Upgradable via a micro SD slot
Comparable processor
USB port
lower price

Some points in favor of the iPad Mini:
slightly lighter
slightly bigger screen
better rear camera
longer battery life

I have that tablet and I love it! I can stream movies and music, use it as a e-reader, browse the web, take pictures and do pretty much everything else. My cable provider also has an app that turns my tablet into another TV (over 100 channels) and I can use the WatchESPN app with it as well.

I just purchase one myself from Costco and I really like it so far. Costco had it with an instant rebate which made it $189 and it included a soft case. There are fewer apps available for this tablet vs. something like an ipad, but it is much cheaper.

The movies I have watched on it look great. I also use it for Hulu Plus and it works well. It is small enough that I can carry it in my purse, but is a bit weighty. My purse already weighs a ton so it doesn't really bother me. Being able to use the micro SD card to expand the storage to 32gb was a big selling point. It also makes it very easy to add movies and music to the tablet.

We have been looking to make a tablet purchase for our family (not as a Christmas gift) and have it narrowed down to the Kindle Fire HD and the Galaxy Tab 2 (both as a 7" version). I went and messed around with them the other day at Best Buy. I'm leaning toward the Fire HD--the screen just looked a little better to me and I've read some bad reviews about the camera quality on the Tab. Now, I don't even know that I would necessarily use it as a camera, but it's still a consideration.

Two salesman at Best Buy told me they feel the new Fire is superior to the iPad mini, and obviously much cheaper. The reviews of the Fire HD look great and they seem to have gotten out a lot of the glitches from the original Fire.

It will be on sale at Best Buy on Black Friday--well, not so much a sale as you get a $30 gift card for purchasing it. I see that the Tab is also on sale at Best Buy in white. It makes me wonder if the Tab will be an inferior product made only to be a loss leader for Best Buy?

If Target has the Kindle Fire HD on sale on BF, that may be my deciding factor. I have a Target that I can go too that's never too crowded. Meanwhile I can't stomach the thought of stepping foot in Best Buy on BF.
