For those you with multiple contracts having the same UY and same names on all the titles, do you only have one DVC membership number? How do you make sure you are only assigned one number ?
I own two resorts with the same UY and titled the same. There was a spot at closing on one of the documents to reference my existing member number so that the new contract would be added to my current account and member number.
If you have a use year and purchase an add-on from Disney, it will usually issue you a contract in the same use year that you have and the new contract becomes associated with your master contract (first one purchased) and part of the same membership number.
If you already own and want to purchase resale, you can find a contract with the same use and then have that one made part of the same membership number you already have. If you purchase a contract with a different use year from the one you already have, then you will be given a new membership number for that new contract and for all purposes of importance, you will be treated as two separate members.
So the answer is nothing prevents you from purchasing a resale contract in a different use year, but be aware of the division between memberships, e.g.: (a) dues will be billed separately to each use year and if you have automatic withdrawal of dues from your checking account monthly, there will be two separate withdrawals; (b) the points in the two use years cannot be mixed to reserve any one night, i.e., if you want to use both use years for a single trip, you cannot just put the points together and make the reservation, instead you either have to transfer points from one use year to the other, or use one use year to reserve part of the nights you want and the other to reserve the other nights and then link the two reservations. Both memberships will appear in one online accoun on the offical DVC site.
I always told the broker and also wrote my existing membership number on the docs that went to Disney after closing. At that time there wasn't a line to include that so I just wrote it at the top of the document but it sounds like they may have added it to the form.

There's no way to guarantee it, DVC is not required to combine them. So far they have but they've refused to fix it if it was not done initially in the past. The way to do it is to put the membership information on the contract, let the closing company know and to contact DVC member admin to let them be on the lookout as well. IMO this is a risk going forward as this is a way DVC could further restrict resales.
This is a situation where it can be worth it to buy retail. If I were going to buy a different UY, I would not buy just 50 points and if that's all I needed and didn't want to buy more, I either wouldn't buy, go retail or keep looking.
