Same resort, 2 different UY and an upcoming stay

We currently own at SSR (Dec UY) and just had an offer accepted for another contract (also SSR but an August UY.)

We have a stay coming up in early January for which we used all of our Dec 2024 pts, and borrowed all of our Dec 2025 points.

I’m anticipating getting our August points loaded by sometime in mid-December. Half of those Aug points are banked 2023 points.

Once they load, is there a way I can take those points from the Aug UY and apply them to our upcoming stay? How do I do this? (We would be under 30-days out when that happens, if it matters.) I fully understand that I cannot “unborrow” the Dec2025 points, and that’s not what I’m asking.

Two different UY means two different memberships. You would not be able to switch the August UY points for Dec UY points online. It might be possible to call MS and have them transfer the August points into your Dec membership and then apply those transferred points ahead of the Dec 2024 points.

As noted, you would need to contact DVC and transfer points from the Aug use year to the Dec use year and have it modify the reservation to use those points.. Two major problems with that: (a) you cannot transfer already banked points from the August use year to the December use year and thus those cannot be used to modify the existing reservation; and (b) if you replace Dec use year points in the reservation with any transferred from the August 2024 use year, those Dec points coming out of the reservation, if that modification is done 30 or fewer days before the reservation, will go into holding, must be used by the end of the use year, and can only be used when making a reservation 60-days or fewer before any desired arrival date.

Right. I understand that the UY wouldn’t change (and all of the points would be getting used within their respective UY except for those banked points.)

But if modifying to get the Aug points used in place of the Dec points, even if we didn’t transfer the banked points, would put the Dec points into holding, then it’s a no-brainer to not touch that January reservation.

Oh nooooo. I’ll have to make another trip to use up the points. That sounds terrible. 🤣

This is a cautionary tale.

Just wait until someone loses it on a CM because they have to change rooms on a multiple UY split stay at the same resort…. when it is their own GD fault for trying to save a few bucks on a cheaper resale contract.

I personally maintain you shouldn't consider a second resort, let alone a second UY until you have AT LEAST one full week stay in the room category you prefer to stay in...

I would consider a second UY only if those points were meant for something specific... think VDH resale points for example...

Anything else is not worth saving the few dollars...

@Herding_Cats - Just curious-- what was your reasoning for purchasing a different UY for a resort you already own?
These “new”points are for when we want to stay in a larger room. Our kid’s ages are really spread out (19 down to 5 with a couple in between, more to the older side) and this just gave us the ability to have a bit more flexibility in room size while the older ones gradually move out and we go back to easily fitting into a studio. I’ve been looking at contracts for a couple of months and nothing with our current UY has shown up at a price that reflects the current market. So it’s a little bit of impatience, a little bit of inexperience, and a little bit that it was a good deal.

I’m going to work off the assumption that you’re not heavily implying that poor behavior with CMS is something I would do.

Bit it’s looking like this could be a good learning post for others since my approach is not the most seamless and easy way to work things if you’re staying at a more “high demand” resort.

We do have this. Having more points that we can transfer in will open up some more options for other resorts if we want to stay somewhere else.

Correct, no assumptions about you as an individual. Just for posterity when others search through the boards.

There are threads where people proclaim that having multiple UYs isn’t an issue and to just get the best deal possible. They also state that you can just to request to “link reservations” or “talk to the people at the front desk”…. and then we read the stories about guests behaving horribly towards CMs when something doesn’t go their way.

This is especially the case with DVC members who have a reputation of acting very entitled.

So, I time stamp this thread as an example of something that COULD go wrong when you have multiple UYs.

FWIW -

We recently booked a 'larger than usual' point stay that required multiple UY. I *was* able to transfer banked points from one UY/contract to another.

I was under the impression you are not able to transfer banked points... my plan was to borrow. For grins I asked the CM about it... very helpful - they basically said, *they* can't transfer banked points, but they can make a call and the 'back office' can transfer banked points. Took less than 2 min on hold... (it looks like they strip it off and make a temporary contract and then push it over - I think there are 2 'extra' contracts listed on my reservation - one ea for banked/unbanked point xfer)

Anyway, yeah, much better to avoid UY point games if you can!

Good Luck!!

It appears that they have updated the rules to allow banked points to transfer when it’s between memberships that have the same owner.

They can reverse that at any time but it has been happening now for almost two years?

I wouldn’t spend much time fretting about what ifs since you just offered on the contract, you might not even have the new points loaded before you go on your Jan. vacation.
Right now according to the closing thread https://www.disboards.com/threads/closing-time.3836891/page-335 it’s taking 60-80 days to close & then load new points, but, Poly just started sales & that may slow MA in creating the membership & loading the points, Christmas will fall right in that 70 day window as well, & of course you’re always at the mercy of how long DVC dawdles w/ ROFR, how efficient your title company is, & how fast your sellers are in getting their closing doc.s notarized & back to the title co., etc.
But, I’m likely jaded, all of my closings took forever, well, except when I bought direct & that time my points were in my account before the ink was dry on the contract 😂.

Our offer was accepted, and the contract was sent to rofr same-day. Our last contract we bought when things were passing in 6 days, so I guess I should buckle up and be ready for it to take a lot longer now. Looking at the rofr thread, that looks like it’s taking about 3-3.5weeks (based on last September contracts.)

I’m hoping there’s very little dawdling all-around. 😂

While the OPs current situation is a bit messy, with banked points on the new contract, after that is settled it's not too bad going forward. We have 2 contracts at Boulder ridge, June (25) and August (200). Usually, in June, I transfer the 25 over to the 200 and book using the 225 together. (Odd situation, but those 25 are direct points giving us blue card status, the 200 are resale points, so here we are, LOL).
