Salad Instead of Appetizer?

At restaurants that have both apps. and salads listed above the entrees, can you get a salad instead of an appetizer?

In the past we have been able to get soup, salad or app.

If the salad is listed with the appetizers (meaning: anywhere but under entrees or desserts) then you may order one on the deluxe plan.

(The basic plan doesn't include an appetizer).
