Let me preface this by saying that while I love Mexican food, I've mainly eaten at San Angel Inn in the past because of the ambience. I've just never found SAI to be that good, especially when compared to the other "authentic" Mexican restaurants (and even Americanized places, for that matter) I've visited. However, my meal there two nights ago changed my attitude about SAI. I had one of the most wonderful Mexican items I've ever tasted: Tlacoyos de Chilorio. Holy guacamole! I ate every bite of this appetizer--which, of course, made me unable to eat my mediocre main course, but it was worth it! This new menu item consists of corn cakes topped with refried black beans, finely shredded pork in a spicy sauce, queso fresco, a tiny dab of sour cream, and a drizzle of green tomatillo sauce. It rivals anything I've had at even the best Mexican restaurants in the country (Rick Bayless's "Topolobampo" and "Frontera Grill," for instance, so we're talking about the big guns!). I practically licked my plate clean. I could eat this item at least once a week! SAI has really redeemed itself with this dish!
