The other month, I went to rent a steam cleaner from Safeway and was handed the rental book to complete my information. I was very concerned that they were giving me access to information completed by others that included their credit card info. and their driver's license. I raised this concern and requested to speak to a manager and advised her because of their lack security, I would not allow them to record my dl but they could view it to verify the information that they required.
Not surprisingly, the manager insisted that recording my dl # was necessary to complete the rental so I left without a cleaner. A little research quickly confirmed my suspicion that not only is such info. not required, but it contrivenes Alberta's Personal Information Privacy Act. I quickly sent off an email to Safeway requesting that they discontinue this practice to comply with the Act and received a form letter response. After sending a second email requesting that Safeway address the specifics of my concern I received no response.
Finally, after a third email where I stated that Safeway was leaving me no alternative but to register a formal complaint with the Commissioner, I received an email from a Vice President acknowledging Safeway's failures in this area and advising me that there would be immediate changes. They are going to improve the training of their clerks to insure that the book is not given to customers to complete and they will discontinue recording the dl #. I'll give a big
to Safeway - unless of course the next time I go to rent a steam cleaner and they ask to record my dl #.
