Safety question ?

We don't do the paper over the windows probably cause around these parts we have blinds!!!! But we do have intruder style drills inside the school and also when they are outside and need to come inside in a hurry. I can't remember the exact name it's called but it's coded something else not to frighten the kids.
Sadly it has become a way of life just like fire drills and bus drills. But even in this scary way of life I don't think we can stop living or start carrying guns everywhere. Just be aware and keep living.

Depressing that these are even necessary. I'd honestly never heard of them in my life.

In a public school?

I'm wondering if your school has mentioned anything about BLM or guns or taking precautions (other than the usual safety drills).
It is a public school. This is a k through 4 school so we don't do anything crazy that would upset the students. We do the drills and explain it on a grade level so the kids are not scared.

Lock down drills, yes. Sadly, that has become the new norm in schools now.

Papering over the windows? LOL. NO. Why in the world would the school want you standing in front of an open window for an extended period of time hanging paper when there is an active shooter?

My husband is a physician. They have active shooter drills in the hospital now, too.

We actually also have lock down drills in my kiddos school, strangely enough.
We had them once a week in my high school after 9/11 people would bring smoke bombs to school and set them off in the trash cans

Honestly your kid may have done it and you not even know about it. I may be the worse parent ever but I had no idea until I worked there. I'd bet most parents don't realize.

That very well may be the case. I certainly can't discuss my level of parenting because then my DIS membership would surely be removed. Based on what I read here I absolutely, without a doubt, do not measure up. Heck, my kids don't either, but that's a thread for another day. :)

we have blinds but we also put paper up on the door and the windows so they can not see in the rooms

I see where that was explained now. Thank goodness! I was going to have to have even more beer if it was what I thought it was because that would just be crazy!

Yes. I was trying to.think how to nicely say that at the point that my anxiety gets so bad I'm putting paper on the Windows and hiding in the dark....it might...I mean just maybe....it might be time to see the doctor.:duck:

Oh please start one. Then we can all discuss our awful parenting skills and wonder why we never receive the mother/father of the year award.

OP'er, I have a question for you. It looks like you started this post around 3:30 today and it is now 11:30. It's been 8 hours. How do you feel now? Are you still just as apprehensive? Do you feel you need to make some changes in your life to help quell the anxiety? Are you even more concerned now? Has this thread helped or hurt?

Isn't your sister also married to an African American man and has a couple of kids? Do they also refer to themselves as a half and half family? I just hadn't seen the term used and wondered if it was a regional term used in your area of NY.

Since your DH is a K-9 state trooper AND African American, I don't really see how your family would be a target even in the minuscule chance you were in the middle of a BLM protest. I'm pretty sure it's easy to avoid being in a BLM demonstration.
My sister is married to a white man and lives in florida.
